The countdown to Paris 2024: An historic moment for women in sport

Paris 2024 is set to make history as the first ever Olympic Games with the same number of female and male athletes taking part.

While it’s long overdue (128 years... yes, I’m counting), this milestone marks a turning point that should be celebrated. For the first time in history, equal numbers of women are taking their rightful place at the biggest sporting event in the world. (Though we should add we’re still a long way of 50:50 representation among coaches at the Games).

Read on for inspiration on how to rally your team around the Paris Olympics, just like I will be with the team here at Women in Sport... and no, it’s not just setting up a big screen in the office, although we will 100% be doing that too.

Paris 2024: A new kind of sweepstakes

Why not amp up the excitement (and the stakes) of the Paris 2024 Games with a sweepstake among your colleagues or friends?

But here’s the twist: instead of the usual medal count, see which country comes out on top with the most medals won by female athletes. If past Olympics are any indication, this could lead to some surprising shifts in the leader board.

It’s more than just a fun competition – by fundraising for Women in Sport, you’ll be supporting our charity’s mission to create lasting, positive change for women and girls in sport and society.

Dive into the excitement, make your predictions, and be part of a movement that’s making history.

Test your Olympics knowledge

Which events did Dame Kelly Holmes compete in?

When were women first allowed to compete in the Olympics?

Why were women banned from pole vault until Sydney 2000?

To celebrate the strides made in women’s sport, we’ve created an Olympics-themed quiz for you to use with colleagues, friends or club members.

From key historical moments and iconic female athletes across the ages, through to myths that kept women on the side-lines for too long – this is not one to miss.

For the full quiz package, email us at [email protected] and we can help you make this a fundraiser to remember.

Thank you for your continued support: each and every donation to our charity allows us to continue the work we do to break down barriers, dismantle stereotypes and demand a spot on the field for women and girls.

Enjoy the Games!

This is an historic Olympic moment, and one that has taken far too long to achieve. We need to celebrate this success AND continue to work for full gender equality at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. There is still a lot of work to be done: https://idrottsforum.org/feature-donnelly240702/.
