What are the best strategies to recruit athletes from underrepresented communities?

A massive realisation for me was that I needed to understand the athlete including circumstances at home. I needed to engage with their family in their home environment. It's one thing providing an opportunity but we had to keep in mind that it in most cases it meant removing the athlete from everything and everyone they have ever known . What support base will they have? -Friends , family Will they fit into the culture? - Without adaptation to their new environment and settling in , any performance will always be limited. It is important that the athlete and their family understands that they will be cared for beyond the development of their abilities .

Absolutely, getting to know and understand each member of the team is crucial for building a strong team dynamic. However, it's equally important to remember that parents and guardians also play a vital role in supporting their young athletes both on and off the field. By establishing open lines of communication and building relationships with parents and guardians, coaches and trainers can help ensure that their athletes have the necessary support to excel in all areas of their lives.

Something I have noticed is that people often tend to forget about others' perspectives and focus on personal agenda. In order to make sure that gifted athletes from various backgrounds are provided a platform, it is necessary to have a good reach and being able to give them stage on local levels and building good relations with the communities to explore these hidden gems and turning them into diamonds.

Establish connections with community leaders, schools, and local sports organizations. Attend community events to understand the unique needs and talents of the underrepresented community.

The key to build long-term relationships with these potential athletes from underrepresented communities is to be able to recruit role models with coaching and soft skills with the same culture and values, and someone that loves the sport, and has been brought up in a local community to truly understand the needs and aspirations of individuals and their families. In the case of cricket in England, there is an alarming drop in the number of Black people involved in cricket over the past 25 years. Therefore, programmes like the African Caribbean Engagement (ACE) programme launched in 2020 by Former England cricketer Ebony Rainford-Brent as an independent charity, are trying to break down the barriers and keep that love for talent that exists.

The best strategy depends on what the projected outcome is. If it is to recruit for college, collaborate with current college athletes who come from underrepresented communities to assist in opening dialog with the recruit. If it's for pro sports, the conversation isn't just with the athlete, it's with their family members as well. Make a phone call, set up a meeting, and show the athlete where they stand in terms of potential compensation. Unfortunately, if there is a lot of competition with other recruiters, you may have to budget for gifts and lavish dinners to get the meeting.

Building relationships is the cornerstone of fruitful recruitment. The most effective recruiters demonstrate authentic care for student athletes as individuals by engaging meaningfully with prospects, families and communities. This means learning values, building local partnerships, and showing genuine interest in athletes’ aspirations beyond sports. By establishing trust and rapport rooted in understanding lives holistically versus merely statistical quotas, programs lay the groundwork for recruitment that resonates with top talent and sustains engagement over the long-term. It’s about relationships, not transactions.

Engage with coaches and parents to build trust and encourage participation. The best way to do this is by organising clinics, camps, etc

The famous quote "People don't care how much you know until you show how much you care" applies in this. People have the need to feel connected and have a sense of belonging in their community, therefore in this context, recruiters should proactively get positively involved with the community of where the potential athletes might come from to establish connections.

Offer sports clinics, workshops, or tryouts in the community to identify and nurture talent. Create scholarship programs or financial assistance to make sports participation more accessible.

In the case of the ACE Programme, the first barrier for County Cricket Boards starts with securing funding from the ECB or national/regional grants, and recruiting a Coach from African Caribbean background. The ACE initiative incorporates talent spotting within schools, followed by trials and the awarding of scholarships to support endeavours to breakthrough into the professional game. Consequently, by joining the ACE academy athletes have a clear pathway back towards achieving their dream of becoming a professional cricketer. I recently helped a County Cricket Board find grants that could help them secure funding for diversity and inclusion initiatives like the ACE Programme which are vital to create new pathways and opportunities.

Expanding access and inclusion allows overlooked talent to shine. Providing equipment, transportation or financial support enables engagement where interest exists but means do not. Sponsoring camps and clinics in under-resourced areas unfurls the welcome mat for communities historically sidelined. Embedding mentors with relatable life experiences grounds success blueprints, making paths seem attainable. We must move beyond rhetoric to purposeful investment in each child’s human potential. This lifts all of society, strengthening communities by empowering them to proudly see their sons and daughters reflected on the main stage. There is no ceiling for those given the chance to realize abilities.

The point above is valid, however, I think that some talented players go undetected for a while and some even lose their potential due to some scouts not proactively scouting players in less conventional locations such as villages and rural areas. I feel sometimes open trials at various locations are necessary in order to provide opportunities for the players from further away to showcase their potential.

Effective communication and complete transparency are two of the most important factors within this process. Starting with effective communication, knowing your crowd in this situation is essential. You must be able to not only develop trust, but be clear and concise with exactly what you mean, what the expectations are on/off the field, academic benefits, housing/meal options and potential incentives at hand.

The ACE Programme focusses on using the powerful platforms of social media and the traditional media to create influence, share key insights, impact reports, learnings and the stories of the participants and the community. These untold stories from local athletes are in my humble experience the key to a successful communications strategy from County Cricket Boards to attract Coaches and athletes to the ACE Programme. The ACE programme celebrates the success of Jofra Archer, Chris Jordan and Sophia Dunkley who are all ambassadors for ACE and gives aspiring Black cricketers a number of current role models to look up to. If I could make a recommendation to the ACE programme it would be to embrace a channel like TikTok where young athletes are.

I believe that the power of ownership creates leader among communities. Therefore getting them involved in leadership roles trains them to become leaders in their community and help uplift the others around them. Giving them ownership also gives them the sense of belonging where they might have otherwise feel marginalised.

Involving athletes from underrepresented communities from the 32 London Boroughs and the City of London is the first step to any sports programme with diversity and inclusion at their core. If your target market is London, a big city that does not offer enough sports facilities in challenging areas, and enough playing opportunities for diverse communities. In general these young athletes from underrepresented communities are not in decision-making roles and therefore rely on their Coaches, Directors and Trustees to give them a voice. Most importantly, leadership roles in cricket including County Cricket Boards need to be educated in diversity and inclusion due to the lack of diverse representation in English cricket.

Encourage community members to actively participate in the recruitment process. Seek input on program development to ensure it aligns with the community's values and aspirations.

Until Los Angeles 2028, cricket will not be back at the Olympic Games. As a sport with 2.5 billion fans and a growing participation in all continents, it would would have be crazy for the IOC not to include it in their summer 2028 tournament. LA2028 offers cricket a platform to grow the sport among future generations, and equally all cricket stakeholders including the ICC, ECB, and IPL will have an opportunity to use the event and its values to educate their membership and leaders in diversity and inclusion. These cricket organisations are role models for society and therefore need to have diversity training and campaigns at their core, and need to create pathways for athletes from underrepresented communities in the lead to LA2028.

Progress acknowledges harsh truths before inspiring futures. Data show glaring diversity deficiencies; a 2022 study noted only 9.4% of Division I women’s basketball head coaches were minorities despite 47% of players being black. Barriers persist, but cultural competence training helps effect change. A 2021 NCAA study found staff completing unconscious bias or racial equity education yielded improved recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups. The path forward rests on patience, compassion, and leaders first self-reflecting then evolving how business gets done so environments feel welcoming, not hostile. It’s about gradual progress, not instant perfection.

You must educate yourself in order to have an understanding of what you are walking into. Not only that that, once you conduct your research on a place, person, culture, etc. you become more versed in terms of conversation and understand how to approach the situation effectively.

The NBA's Basketball Without Borders program identifies talented young players globally, offering opportunities for skill development and exposure to professional leagues. Additionally, mentorship programs connecting aspiring athletes with successful role models from similar backgrounds inspire and guide them toward sports careers. Removing barriers and offering support networks enables athletes from underrepresented communities to access opportunities and pursue their athletic aspirations.
