CONSTANT SPORTS WEEK IN REVIEW
Recent Interview: Mason Webster Manager, Sports Experiences On Location
"It's a really cool moment when you know you're giving a bunch of fans a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
The Constant Sports Podcast was fortunate enough to be joined by Mason Webster, a Manager of Sports Experiences at On Location. Mason received his undergraduate degree at the University of Kentucky and went on to receive his Master's in Sports Administration at the University of Miami. During his time in Miami, Mason had the opportunity to intern for both Legends and FIBA Americas Global Events team before accepting his current role at On Location after receiving his degree.
As Mason explained, the main goal of On Location is to redefine the live event experience. The company provides packages for large-scale sporting events to support elite hospitality for a certain fanbase. These packages include things such as hotel rooms, transportation, and entertainment throughout the week of the event. Sporting events that On Location has dealt with in the past include the Super Bowl, NCAA 2024 Men's Final Four Host Committee, the Masters, and college football bowl games.
Mason works within the collegiate athletic department, meaning he deals with multiple college basketball tournaments and college football bowl games. He's extremely busy during bowl season as before the bowl games are even selected, the On Location team has to draft out multiple scenarios and the type of experience they would be able to provide based on the numerous cities that certain schools could end up in. Similarly, On Location has a partnership with half of the teams that were in the NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament this past year, meaning they had to plan for multiple different scenarios in terms of who would make the Final Four in Houston. All four of the final four teams ended up being On Location clients, resulting in a very busy weekend for Mason and his team. Although he was busy, he really enjoyed the opportunity to give fans a great experience.
Mason advises those still in school to take advantage of informational interview opportunities as they can help develop relationships within the industry while also teaching you new skills, leading to success down the road.

EMERGING TOPICS IN THE SPORTS INDUSTRY
Luton Town FC Promoted to Premier League
In what is often referred to as the "richest game in sports", Luton Town FC defeated Coventry in penalties to earn promotion to the Premier League. As one of the greatest underdogs in sports, Luton Town was purchased for a whopping $7 back in 2003. The club has filed for bankruptcy twice since this purchase. It started its climb in 2013 by winning titles in lower leagues, and will now be part of the biggest league in European football thanks to the victory last weekend. Their small stadium in the middle of a neighborhood holds 8,000 fewer fans than the Allen High School football stadium in Texas. Yes, a high school football team can seat thousands more fans than an English Premier League club. Due to the great underdog story, the entire soccer world is looking forward to seeing how Luton Town matches up with Premier League opponents next season.
NHL Seeing Best Viewership in Five Years
As the National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Finals begin this weekend, the league has to be thrilled with the numbers they've seen this postseason. Playoff games have averaged a viewership of 1.13 million so far this postseason. While the numbers are great, much of it can be attributed to the opening round. The League saw its best first-round viewership ever this postseason, but the numbers have started to decline due to the exit of large market teams. With the conference finals including Dallas Stars, Vegas Golden Knights, Florida Panthers, and Carolina Hurricanes (none of which are massive hockey markets), the league saw viewership drop almost 25% when compared to the conference finals last season. With Florida and Vegas set to square off in the Stanley Cup Finals, the league hopes they can see similar numbers to the Colorado Avalanche vs Tampa Bay Lightning Finals from last season.
