The biggest mistake people make when creating a Resume/CV ❌

Canva recently released a list of their "Top 10 Resume Templates" but they're all missing something important.

Resume/CV templates are a great way to save you time and get started, but they can also be a bit of a trap. While it may seem like all you need to do is customise a template to make it your own, this isn't always the case. The type of job you're seeking, work experience and skills you have are all factors to consider before choosing a resume template.

In particular, when applying for remote jobs, it's not just about getting your foot in the door—it's about standing out from a pool of world-class talent. And that means making sure your CV is easy to read, shows off your best qualities and is compatible with applicant tracking systems (ATSs).

If you're using a Canva resume template, you might not be doing yourself any favours. Here are 3 reasons why.

  1. Resume templates from Canva fail to capitalise on how a human reads a resume and do not convey key points. Remember, you have only about 6 seconds to catch the recruiter’s attention.
  2. These resumes are light on content and heavy on graphics. They won't give recruiters the scope details, value proposition, or pattern of accomplishments they need to evaluate your application.
  3. It's VERY dated to include a headshot and references in your resume, and it delivers the message that you don't follow the best practices.

When you upload your resume into an ATS, the ATS then parses out the text of your resume to make it searchable for a recruiter or import the information into a digital candidate profile. If an ATS can’t accurately parse your CV, your chances of getting picked for an interview are low – even if you’re perfectly qualified!

Now, don't get me wrong: Canva is great for all kinds of things ✅. For example, it's convenient for making custom graphics and putting together social media graphics. But when it comes to CVs / resumes? Not so much. ❌

The process of building a resume can take a long time. After all, you're not just looking for any job; you're looking for your dream remote job. And who wants to spend hours trying to figure out how to format their CV when there are so many other things that need doing?
