Advice for the first marketing hire

This is a repost of my response to the original question on the First Round Network: What advice do you have for a first marketing hire?

In the order of priority:

  • Strategic thinker - Working smart > Working hard
  • Hard worker/GSD/Sleeve-rolled or no-sleeved
  • Versatile - Awesome to be great at a couple things, but need to be decent at everything
  • 80/20 Rule grasper - Don't need perfection early. This is very important.
  • Quant > Qual - Brand/Comm isn't going to bring in deals early. You need the scrappy quant who's good at demand gen (or ABM).
  • Scrappy - Budgets are small. Find someone who can do more with less.

Hey Marc, it is good to see you. My younger daughter is CMO for TrueReligion company. I am sure of her assistance if needed. Take care

I learn, think, write, paint, and share. On LinkedIn, I write about the future, the natural environment, creativity, aging, purpose, and contribution in a world that's changing faster than most of us can adapt.

I'd add this: Must care passionately about generating revenue, not just activity. My best advice to any young B2B marketer: Get as close as you can to revenue, and stay there.

Figure out what motivates them - this is key. And it is one of 3 things, you will know the winner when they say the right thing. People that are unsure will talk in circles.
