In light of the monster article on e-commerce I'm writing, here are 10 interesting Amazon facts:
1. Amazon went public 20 years ago, only 3 years after Jeff Bezos founded it.
2. Amazon is the largest online retailer in the world, measured by revenue, but comes in second when measured by sales.
3. The revenue from online sales of Amazon is bigger than the combined revenue of the other Top50 online retailers ($88.3 billion to Amazon’s $94.7 billion).
4. AWS keeps Amazon profitable.
5. Amazon is the fourth most valuable company in the world.
6. Amazon is the eighth largest employer in the USA. It has more than 540,000 employees.
7. 2 years after going public, Amazon bought Alexa internet. That means Amazon owns an SEO agency and a tool with tons of data on the competitive landscape.
8. Amazon/Bezos bought IMDB in 1998 for 55 million in cash. That means Bezos owns the 7th and 6th largest site on the internet (according to Searchmetrics).
9. Amazon owns Audible, the world's largest producer of audiobooks (bought in 2008), Goodreads (acquired 2013), fabric.com (2008), and tons more.
10. On desktop search, Amazon covers way more keywords than eBay, Macys or Walmart. On mobile, the sets overlap much stronger, suggesting that the competition is higher (source: SEMrush).
