Exactly. The facts get jn the way of Al Jazeera BS.

This is gold! 🏆 Douglas Murray dismantles Jane Dutton, a South African journalist and former Al Jazeera reporter, in under a minute. I hope journalism students are learning from Murray's fact-based approach to research, rather than relying on the performative inflections of primary sources. The truth, and only the truth. #journalism #journalist #truth #truthmatters #facts #factsmatter #knowthetruth #standwithus #humanity #students

I love guest speaking for journalism and journalism-related classes. I remember being a student and being so inspired by young professionals in my desired career path, and I feel like I'm paying it forward if I can do that for the next generation! Professors have lots of wisdom to share, but they can often come from a different time (and a different version of the journalism industry to boot) — bringing in guest speakers is one way to add additional perspectives and context. Here's some of the feedback I got from my lecture earlier this month. 😊

Believe it or not, journalists and historians share similar disciplines and obligations yet remain distinct enough to be separate entities. But how is this? I have a theory. "...Journalists actively engage in public forums, recording and criticising histories... Historians on the other hand, passively observe then record histories, with varying perspectives of issues derived from their scholarly stances..." You can read more below...

'Truth-Telling & Histories of Genocide' - well worth the listen. My outtakes: Local vs. Performative Importance of connecting Justice to Truthtelling - following through. The 'security imperative' behind the narrowing of the current definition of genocide as well as justifying acts of genocide. When national identity is constructed by conquering other nations and mass violence. How hatred or deep ideological conviction can transform people/us overnight to target a particular group and then disremember them.
In July 2024, we were partnership for A History Now online-only special event on 'Truth-Telling & Histories of Genocide' You can now listen to this talk on our website via our podcast page Listen to Lorena Allam, Dirk Moses and Ümit Kurt reflect on what can be learned from histories of genocide, and locate their discussion between journalism, history and processes of truth-telling. Check out the podcast now via https://buff.ly/3LIXHxO This event was held in partnership with the Centre for the Study of Violence, The University of Newcastle, Australia In 2024, the series, curated and directed by Dr Jesse Adams Stein, is a partnership event between the History Council of NSW, the Australian Centre for Public History UTS: University of Technology Sydney and The State Library of New South Wales The History Council of NSW is supported by a grant from the NSW Government via Create NSW

After having a few posts on my newsletter, I realized I never wrote a detailed mission statement. So today's post focuses on why I created The 411 and why it's dedicated to covering Black people, the Black community and their contributions. If you like independent journalism please give it a read, share, and subscribe. More work in on the way.

I must confess that this event is really timely! After the Insightfull Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) Conversation themed- Strategies for integrating female voices in news and news room leadership on X yesterday, which left me with these key points, as my take home from the panelists- 📌"Leadership roles are not for a specific gender. 📌You have to take the bull by the horn, and be intentional in learning, developing and training! 📌 Gender disparity is high in the media space and no man would want to shift for you, except you intentionally go out and push the limits!" And now, realizing that this forth coming conference is also channeled towards being intentional in media career development, I must say, it's indeed more than a coincidence! I think, this enlightning repetition on being intentional, is intentionally handled with intentionality from these Legendary Media Practitioners. Thanks to Media Career Development Network and all the Organisers for this brilliant initiative.🙏 We can't wait to be part of this!
I have always wanted to have a conference focused mainly on intentional career development in the media and not just skills alone. Thanks to the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), our speakers David Oluwamayowa Ajikobi Anikeade Funke-Treasure Anita Ebinehita Eboigbe Taiwo Obe Kofoworola Belo-Osagie Bosede E. Olusola-Obasa adebisi adetunji and others my dream conference for journalists, media professionals and students would hold on Thursday, October 31, 2024.
