Today's a very special day, especially if you're on the younger side, because it's World Children's Day. This annual event aims to highlight the issues facing children under 18 years and over 500 Australian schools will be marking the occasion. To tell us more about everything World Children's Day, we're joined by Zoe Gray and a Child and Youth Engagement Manager at UNICEF. Morning. Zoe, how are you? Good morning, Danny, Thanks so much for having me today. How are you doing? I'm very well. Thank you very much. You're the 1st guest who ever asked me that. Thank you so much. How did World Children's Day first come about, Zoe? Yeah, So, well, Children's Day is a global day of action. It's four children, five children. And it actually adopts the adoption of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child, so celebrated on the 20th of November every year to promote international togetherness. And today's a really special one because it's the 35th anniversary of the Convention of the Rights of the Child. And this convention really guides everything that UNICEF Australia does. So we spend this day advocating, raising awareness to protect and. Feel the rights of every child without discrimination. That's beautiful stuff. Serious questions. First, based on Unicef's work, what do you feel are the most sort of pressing concerns for Australian children today? Yeah, there's a lot that we're seeing here in Australia because a lot of Australian kids are well supported in areas like health, safety and education. However, we're really seeing that inequality is growing and many Australian kids are needing more support. So we're seeing this in areas of poverty, education. Child and youth participation, digital well-being and safety, early childhood education and climate change as well. What can we as adults do to support children when they speak up and they want to have their concerns taken seriously? Yeah, so the best thing we can do is to take the time to really listen to them when they do speak up, because we're hearing that too in three young Australians say that they are rarely or never consulted or given opportunities to even participate in issues that affect them. So we want to turn up the noise for children. That's what adults can do. And this year we're getting hundreds of schools and there are 10s and thousands of children around Australia. They've gained really loud about their rights, so we need to make sure. That we take the time to listen because that's actually one of the Convention of the Rights of the Child. And Speaking of loudness, the theme this year for World Children's Day is a minute of loudness. Can you tell us what this entails? Well, we'll be able to at a certain point today, just here in the distance, the joyous screams of millions of children. Absolutely, you'll be able to these schools and these students get so loud to share their hopes and ideas for the future. So wearing, raging, all students, whether it's singing, dancing, chanting, playing an instrument, we want every child. Turn up the volume on what they have to say and get loud about their rights because as UNICEF Australia, we really want to hear how we can make Australia an even better place for every child. And when I say loud, I really mean it. Last year we had people with watches on who were at the assembly and the watchers gave them an alert saying that it went too loud. They were in like a concert area. So kids have a lot to say, as you would know, and it's really time that the adults hear what they have to say. Good on your kids. Turn it up one time. Where can people go if they want to find out more about today's World Children's Day events and indeed all of the wonderful work that UNICEF is doing there to ensure that children are heard? Yes, they can go to unicef.org dot AU and we appreciate all the support because children rights really are human rights. So we want everyone to get on board today and everyday. Zoe, grandchild and youth engagement manager, UNICEF. Thank you so much for joining us here this morning on 2 SCR breakfast. Thank you so much, Danny. Have a wonderful day.

📢 United Nations Secretary-General's Message for World Children's Day 2024:
"On World Children’s Day, we celebrate the youngest members of our human family.
"But today is also a moment to recognize the enormous challenges children face in our deeply divided, tumultuous and often violent world.
"It is shocking that, in the 21st century, any child still goes hungry, uneducated, or without even the most basic health care.
"It is a stain on humanity’s conscience when children’s lives are caught in the grinding wheels of poverty, or upended by disasters or violent conflicts that are killing and maiming children.
"One hundred years ago, the League of Nations adopted the Declaration on the Rights of the Child — the foundation of the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child, the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history.
"This year’s theme reminds us that we must listen to children as they fight for their rights — and for humanity’s future.
"The recently adopted Pact for the Future includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations. All three texts contained strong commitments to protect and support children, invest in their rights, and expand opportunities to actively participate in the decisions affecting them.
"Every child has the right to live in peace, health and safety.
"Today and every day, let’s protect and support children as they meaningfully contribute to making our world a better, brighter, more peaceful place for all people."
- António Guterres

Play is the universal language of joy. It has the capability of regulating emotions, increasing focus, putting the body in motion and dissolving socio cultural boundaries. Life without play is not well lived. It's a serious work of childhood, leisure for the teens and a luxury for the adults. The soft power of this phenomenal activity is often underestimated.
You want to
make friends; play
exercise; play
smile; play
feel light; play
improve cognitive ability; play
connect; play
communicate; play
build relationships; play
live the present moment; play
Why is 'play' underplayed in our children's lives?
The reasons are well illustrated in this video.
How can we make play an integral part of our routine?
📢 June 11th is now declared the #InternationalDayofPlay by the United Nations General Assembly, putting play back on the agenda for 2 billion children around the world.
Together with our partners, children and youth, we’re leveraging our expertise, resources, and networks to make this day a reality.
A day to mark every child’s right to play, ensuring it is respected, protected, and fulfilled, enabling them to thrive and reach their full potential.

🗓 The 25th of May marks the International Missing Children's Day, first established in 1983 by the United Nations General Assembly to remember the disappearance of little Ethan Patz, kidnapped in New York on 25 May 1979.
🌐On this important occasion, the Italian organisation
Fondazione SOS il Telefono Azzurro ETS organised the conference "INVISIBLE CHILDREN", in Rome, to shed light on this dramatic issue and to define a national and European network for their protection.
The event saw the participation of the Vicar of the Extraordinary Commissioner of the Italian Government and international experts on the subject of child and adolescent protection, who addressed the issue of missing children by analysing it with the aim of implementing concrete actions for the safeguard and protection of children and adolescents from a common perspective.
🤝In cooperation with the international support network for missing children, of which Telefono Azzurro is a member, together with other organisations such as Missing Children Europe and the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (@icmecorg), the main causes of the phenomenon and possible solutions were examined, as well as other significant topics such as the role of civil society and the importance of transnational cooperation in the protection of missing children and adolescents.

🛑 Gaza’s Children- Unbearable Reality of a Lost Generation.
👉🏿 Let us face it, the ‘life’ has changed totally and forever for the 2.2 million people living in the Gaza Strip. It is an unbearable hell of fear and insecurity for 2.2 million people without homes and lack of all essentials for life.
🤷♀️🤷🏼 More catastrophic is for the children that are innocent victims in any violent conflict specially the unprecedented impacts of the ongoing war in Gaza. There are immediate and ungent needs to protect, secure and save the lives of at least the children just for the sake of survival no more (https://lnkd.in/du3h7zCZ). As the violence continues, the death toll rises, with over 30,000 people reported dead in the Gaza Strip, including 12,500 children. Also, ten of thousands still lost or under the rubbles as well as an estimated 17,000 Palestinian children are unaccompanied or separated from their parents. Called WCNSF, which stands for Wounded Child, No Surviving Family. It is unprecedented heavy price the children are paying, and will continue to pay for longtime in the future, for this brutal war.
🛎️ We will be definitely facing a longterm and a large-scale reality where restoring the life for the children in particular and going back to a normal conditions in Gaza will not be an easy, simple or straightforward task to deal with. There are many unclear pre-requests. First, the war will still go on, no-one knows when it will end and there is no vision or roadmap, even from Natanyahu and his far-right extremist government, regarding how Gaza will look like.
⁉️More importantly how the massive and huge destruction of the underlying public service infrastructure will be restored and rebuilt, e.g. education, agriculture and food-production, health, housing, energy-, water-, sanitation-infrastructure, transport, handel and businesses, ….. etc. It isn’t at all a trivial task and will certainly require enormous resources, work, efforts, planning/management and very long time.
Opinions are entirely my own and you are welcome to them
