Just before the pandemic, one of the VPs at 7-11 asked me if I had ever heard of Foxtrot. I told him no, and he encouraged me to visit one. Since there was one in D.C. I stopped in. It was everything a white collar customer could want. It was clean, the employees were friendly, and most importantly there was a high range of premium and specialty items. Most things were better for you, organic or carried some type of labeling that let you know it was better quality than your typical c-store item. Despite their desire to disrupt the c-store industry by going premium, they closed up yesterday. The pandemic likely had something to do with it. Many of their locations are in urban areas which still have not completely bounced back. As someone who feels they understand the c-store industry at a high level, this business model was strong, it just launched at the wrong time. I hope someone else has the courage to refine the product assortment of convenience stores. While it is great to get a Slim Jim and a Coke, sometimes consumers want to have more choices for healthly , better for the environment, and better for you options. #retail #smallbusiness #timing Brett Dworski

As a Retail student I was fascinated with how Mr. Biyani talks about embracing the changes to keep up with the generation and their changing consumption patterns and demand. He talks about how communications have changed for a brand from mass communication. Further he talks about how India is a successful market for any brand for their future growth. He emphasises on how new retail formats are going to be evolved and this will be a game changer in the future. Growth of new categories in niche segments are becoming popular. In the end he talks about what will retail be in the next ten years. Mr. Kishore Biyani's forward-thinking approach underscores the necessity for retailers to not just follow trends but to anticipate and lead them.

Loading up those tiny bowls with precariously balanced toppings has become an Olympic event. But what does this have to do with your business? We need to take a closer look at our current clients and see what they have in their "salad bowl" from us. Are there any additional services or products that we can offer them at a special rate since they are already working with us? It's important not to underestimate the availability people have to other products once they are already engaged with your company. By pitching to past clients and now targeting current ones, we are sure to get some quick wins. Krispy Kreme is one of a handful of companies that can get customers to queue up in extraordinarily long lines for a grand opening, the launch of a new donut variety or the daily ritual of picking up a hot batch of donuts. Part of the lure of Krispy Kreme donuts has been the ability to pick them up when they're still piping hot, and the company even has signs at its locations to let customers know that hot donuts are available. During a period when Krispy Kreme tried to expand its distribution through a partnership with 7-Eleven and strayed away from the hot donut mantra, the company took a major financial hit and even had to restructure. Now Krispy Kreme is again looking to expand distribution through a partnership with McDonald's. Have they cracked the code this time or have they sacrificed what their fans love about them most to tap into the power of the McDonald's brand? Will Krispy Kreme fans line up at McDonald's to get their hot donut fix? That remains to be seen, but Krispy Kreme's ups and downs provide a powerful lesson in working backward from the customer. No company is guaranteed that once they achieve cult status on the basis of products and practices that wow customers, that they will always enjoy that status. Customer Obsession is a business strategy that businesses must continue to commit themselves to daily and then align their products and practices to match or else risk losing their membership in the exclusive club of businesses known for delivering the pinnacle of CX. A very interesting article for those who are not familiar with the process of getting onto a shelf. For those who believe they do - keep in mind that GETTING ON is the easy part, so many products get on the shelf, get poor placement, or the packaging does not grab the consumers' attention - so they fall off in less than 18 months and face massive bill backs. And for the really smarter ones, who are killing it on road shows with Costco - keep this in mind - who is actively selling your stuff there, when you are not? No one is! Those thousands of units a day that your team sells during a road show WILL NOT be duplicated, by an stretch of the imagination, IF you make it into the case for reals.
