    The other day, someone likened 'doing' Retail media to explaining the rules of a complex board game to a group of new players. As a board game nerd, this hurts my heart. When I'm passionate about something, and KNOW that there is so much opportunity in the experience, I just want everyone to be as excited as me - and be able to visualize the result, like I do. Hot take - this isn't how it works in reality. Your passion doesn't just transfer to others simply because you read from the rule book. In my experience working brand-side and agency-side, it can feel like 90% of your time is spent explaining what has happened, and fighting for what needs to happen to stakeholders. This internal selling skill so often goes unrecognized. It's super hard to engage a group of new players... here are some tips from my own personal work (and gaming) experiences: 🎲 Know what has to be explained NOW versus, what can be learned along the way. --- Prioritization is a real exercise in restraint but will ensure the audience stays with you --- Keep it short and sweet - but make sure the details about how to win are clear 🎮 Give the players (or stakeholders) a sneak peak of what success could look like --- Be forward facing, not backwards facing --- Use examples, visuals, data --- Showcase a bit of the strategy, without giving too much detail - allow them to create their own inputs regarding how to get to the win 🕹️ Remember, when all the players are having fun (or feeling successful) everyone wins! --- Bring positivity, encourage feedback, and remember the goal isn't necessarily for you to WIN, but to get everyone to learn the game. --- Keep all the players in the loop and remind often of what comes next so that they don't feel like they missed something important If you focus on getting all the players to know the game the first time around, next time you play you can move faster, try new strategies and play for the win (or that tournament trophy that will fit nicely on your shelf and complete your nerd wall of fame)! 🏆
