By midcentury, climate impacts could drive up to 100 million Africans to migrate within their countries or regionally. Mobility hotspots include the borders of Niger and Nigeria, Lake Victoria (Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania), and the Horn of Africa. Despite speeding urbanization, climate impacts will also force up to 4.2 million people out of coastal cities. Planning for this potential scale of population movement will help reduce vulnerability as well as inspire development opportunities to further sustainable growth across the continent

By the end of 2023, the European Parliament and the Council had reached a political agreement on several key proposals included in the ('New') Pact on Migration and Asylum. Between 6 and 9 June 2024, EU citizens will be called to the ballot for the European elections and migration is expected to be one of the most decisive issues. Member #states must now contribute through relocations, financial support, or in-kind aid. The far-right is gaining ground across Europe. With our members, we're building resistance. As far-right politics and their anti-migrant messages become more normalised, migration policies become more repressive in a growing number of EU countries. Some of the EU’s recent policies in the area of migration, like the EU Migration Pact, are also aiming to institutionalise them. Last May, we brought together over 60 member organisations at our General Assembly in Madrid to reflect on the current context and strategise about resistance and mobilisation in the next five years. 🌍 The Catalan Government Conveys Its Stance on Key Issues to European Institutions for the New Political Cycle We are taking action to ensure our priorities are heard in Brussels as the new European political cycle begins. Detailed reports have been prepared and sent to influential actors within European institutions, aiming to impact the priorities of the upcoming European Commission. This initiative is part of the Government’s broader strategy to strengthen its influence in EU affairs. Key issues addressed include: 📜 Official Status of Catalan: Highlighting the importance of making Catalan an official EU language to bring the EU closer to its citizens. 🌐 Migration and Asylum Policies: Advocating for human-rights-respectful policies and integrated approaches beyond security-focused perspectives. 💧 Water Management: Calling for an integrated approach at the European level and the creation of a Mediterranean Macro-Regional Strategy. 🏭 Competitiveness and Reindustrialization: Proposing improvements in the governance of EU funds to maximize their transformative impact. 📈 Economic Governance: Requesting fair fiscal objectives that consider territorial disparities within member states. 💶 Ambitious EU Budget: Advocating for a budget focused on ecological transition, social justice, and sustainable management. ⚖️ Equality and Non-Discrimination: Proposing a Horizontal Directive on Equality of Treatment and expressing concern about setbacks in some EU member states. 🏥 Sexual and Reproductive Rights: Demanding these rights be included in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights for universal access.
