By midcentury, climate impacts could drive up to 100 million Africans to migrate within their countries or regionally. Mobility hotspots include the borders of Niger and Nigeria, Lake Victoria (Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania), and the Horn of Africa. Despite speeding urbanization, climate impacts will also force up to 4.2 million people out of coastal cities. Planning for this potential scale of population movement will help reduce vulnerability as well as inspire development opportunities to further sustainable growth across the continent
The European Parliament made history. We have delivered a robust legislative framework on how to deal with migration and asylum in the EU. A set of laws that go a long way, providing a balance between solidarity and responsibility, and that are the same in all Member States. This has been more than ten years in the making. But we kept our word. There is still more to do, but I am proud that the European Parliament has defied the odds and addressed an issue that matters to people. That respects our shared humanity. That recognises that this is an issue that Europe must address together. This is the European way. Spoke with Mared Gwyn Jones from Euronews about the commission's differentiated approach to neighborhood countries. One the one hand, commissioner for enlargement to promote human rights among other priorities, while on the other a commissioner for the Mediterranean to promote migration cooperation, without mention of human rights. Tasking the commissioner for Mediterranean with challenging "anti-EU narratives," while at the same time deepening ties with repressive governments and propping up unpopular migration cooperation deals presents a major challenge. It will be important to have a team of advisers with strong ties to Mediterranean countries, both at government and civil society levels. https://lnkd.in/e9NrBncV

What does the instrumentalisation of migration mean in the freshly adopted EU legislative package on migration and asylum? What is the genealogy of this concept and how does it relate to the comprehensive partnership model pushed forward in EU relations with third countries? What impact does it have on the future of fundamental rights protection in the EU? I will try to shed light on these issues during my first lecture at the Università di Napoli L'Orientale. Excited to go back to the city of my heart, where I made my first steps as a young adult, and proud of sharing some knowledge and critical thinking with fellow students. #EU #migration #humanrights

The far-right is gaining ground across Europe. With our members, we're building resistance. As far-right politics and their anti-migrant messages become more normalised, migration policies become more repressive in a growing number of EU countries. Some of the EU’s recent policies in the area of migration, like the EU Migration Pact, are also aiming to institutionalise them. Last May, we brought together over 60 member organisations at our General Assembly in Madrid to reflect on the current context and strategise about resistance and mobilisation in the next five years. In our latest blog, we share key highlights of our discussions around: ⭐ EU Migration Pact and its harms on people ⭐ Global Compact for Migration ⭐ opportunities for strategic litigation against the EU Pact ⭐ rights violations at borders of Bulgaria, Greece and Spain ⭐ strategic directions for future mobilisation Read more in our blog on: https://lnkd.in/dycS7M47 #migration #humanrights #socialjustice

The #EU's New Pact on #Migration and Asylum introduces a flexible, mandatory #solidarity mechanism to address long-standing imbalances in #asylum responsibilities under the 'Dublin' rules. Member #states must now contribute through relocations, financial support, or in-kind aid. This #policy study analyzes the mechanism and governance structures, concluding with reflections on achieving a fairer distribution of #responsibility among EU countries. https://lnkd.in/eh7tp4wT

ne of the main dilemmas of the current humanitarian crisis is the lack of interest of Western cultures in dealing with current immigration issues. In this book, we explore not only the ebbs and flows of migratory issues but also the lack of global jurisprudence to cope with human rights violations in the world. Although the nation-state is inclined to protect the lay citizens´ rights, under some conditions it acts as a key driver to systematic human rights violations. In our times, a moment of humanity where the “other” is considered as “undesired guests,” a hot debate on the future of human rights and the challenges faced by liberal democracies to manage the current humanitarian crisis is necessary. The selected chapters have been authored by well-versed authors who dedicated their lives to the study of this phenomenon. The book interrogates further the failure of the United Nations to give a firm legal background to be applied contextually in practical terms. https://lnkd.in/eM2M_g36 #newbook #politicalscience #socialscience #humanitarian
