"You're a long way from home. What are you doing in *insert state here* ?" We travel a lot, so we hear that question a lot, including today while recruiting at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma, Washington. The answer to that question is always the same. "We are looking for future Arizona State Troopers... they just don't live in Arizona yet." There are great candidates all over the country. If we were to restrict our recruiting efforts to within Arizona's borders only, we would miss out on a lot of them. Motivated people move cross-country for great job opportunities in other industries all the time, so why would that be different when seeking a career with an elite law enforcement agency? The simple answer: It's not. A comprehensive recruiting plan is one that targets the best candidates, both in- and out-of-state.

Yes, I can imagine! I envisioned a change after almost six years in one police department, and I made it happen. Sure, there are some challenges to navigate, like adjusting to different shift schedules and adapting to a new team dynamic. Losing some of the seniority you've built up can sting a bit, too. But hey, every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Despite the initial adjustments and the occasional mix-up with the radio codes, I'm embracing this change with open arms. And yes, I miss my old crew and familiarity with my old department, but there's something invigorating about stepping into a new role and expanding my horizons. Plus, every department has its own unique culture and traditions. And here’s a piece of advice: stop listening to outside influences and politics. Things are sometimes not what they seem to be. So, to all my fellow officers contemplating a change: don't hesitate to take the leap. You might thrive in your new environment, armed with fresh perspectives and experiences to enrich your journey. And hey, if all else fails, at least you'll have plenty of entertaining stories to share at the next department potluck. 🍩 👮🏾♂️ Now stop playing games and hit that apply button.

#InternationalWomensDay | PC Da Silva is a response officer based in Somerton, who has been in response for eight years and is looking for the next big step in her career by joining the Operations unit. “I wanted to delve into the world of Operations, and after researching all my options, my interest was piqued by a specific team. As well as being interested in the role, I wanted to contribute to the female representation of the department.” PC Da Silva first joined Avon and Somerset Police and became a front office advisor. When Police Constable vacancies became available, she was successful in applying and began her new role in March 2016. “It was challenging – at the beginning, I doubted as to whether the role was right for me. But with experience grew my love for the job, and without it I wouldn’t have explored further opportunities within the role. I became a tutor while I was based in Yeovil, and I loved teaching people at the very start of their careers. Passing on teachings that would in turn be passed on in the future was a rewarding responsibility to have. I stayed there for around five years, gaining extra skills such as pursuit driving and taser, until I decided to try a new avenue, and so I turned to rural policing.” PC Da Silva has worked in response in Somerton for three years. She is passionate about helping communities and making a difference to many people’s lives. “My favourite part of my role is that genuine feeling when you’ve helped someone and, in some cases, changed their life. When I receive a thank you email from a victim of crime that I’ve helped, I know that I’ve done something to change their circumstance or empower them to do something they once thought wasn’t possible. I’m really excited to start my journey into Operations; I was so proud to pass the assessment and be accepted to the team. It takes real courage to be part of a team that will be dealing with such a variety of jobs, and I am willing to do that.” #InspiringInclusion

Prior to 1974, women were prohibited by law from becoming California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers. That all changed on September 30, 1974, when 40 women reported to the CHP Academy as part of the Women Traffic Officer Project (WTOP). This two-year study was launched as a trial to evaluate women's fitness and capability as CHP officers. Of that group of women, 27 completed Academy training and were sworn in as CHP officers on January 16, 1975, paving the way for future generations of women in the Department.
