BIG ANNOUNCEMENT ALERT: In the past few weeks, I’ve dropped a few previews of the content for this year’s Women in Restaurant Leadership Summit (February 19–20, in Nashville). And now, it’s time to reveal the opening keynote. We’re going to kick off the event with Shannon Hennessy, CEO of Habit Burger & Grill and member of the Yum! Brands family. She stepped into the role in 2023 and formerly served as CFO of KFC’s Global Division. If you haven’t heard Shannon drop wisdom before, I can promise it’s going to be eye-opening. She’s a trailblazer. This is going to be one amazing session and we’re honored she’s joining us. Speaking more broadly, this event and platform has really evolved into a space where women leaders at all levels, from first stop to long-tenured execs, can ask questions about authenticity, vulnerability, and tradeoffs, as one of our board leaders told me the other day. We launched it because somebody asked us to. Where was it headed? I had zero clue. But as she noted, there seems to be an underlying current of fear to step into this form of leadership. And the organic nature of WiRL (from our board to our speakers, we’ve opened the door to those who want to support us and each other) shows women are craving accessible and guilt-free ways to connect with leaders of their level and above. And so that’s the task we’ve been given here at QSR and FSR to try to nurture—provide the space to elevate a community as well as a conversation. Shannon embodies that more than I can jot down in a social post, as you’ll see in Nashville. Looking back at my time last month at the Holland & Knight’s Women Initiative Leadership Retreat (#HKWomensInitiative), I cannot help but consider the conversations we focused on (building thriving, sustainable practices), the lessons from our guest panelists discussing thriving as leaders in male-dominated industries, and my discussions last year with local women lawyers for my article The Truth About Women Litigators. Three common themes showed up for each of these conversations:   1.      Start the conversation. We are as strong as our connections. Do not pass up an opportunity to meet new people and expand your network. You never know who you will meet at that cocktail party you were reluctant to attend, and you may even get the opportunity to help someone new who really needs your help.   2.      Be authentic. Each of the retreat panelists spoke about never jeopardizing their values and who they are. Remember you are not going to be for everyone and that is OK. It is better to be yourself, and know right away whether that job or client relationship is a good fit for you, your values, and what you want for your career.    3.      Speak up. You are hired for your opinions and your thinking. Do not be afraid to speak up – including when it is not the popular opinion. Do your research, listen to the views of others, but when it is warranted and justified, stand your ground. More often than not, you will be applauded for your tenacity and conviction.   We learn a lot when we come together and listen to each other. What will you learn from your colleagues and clients today? (Link to article below in comments).

The WomenExecs on Boards (WEoB) story began with the inaugural 2016 Harvard Business School Women on Boards: Succeeding as a Corporate Director Program, which included 67 participants. Following the course the participants initiated monthly calls to maintain connections and foster a supportive community. As the discussions deepened, the vision for WEoB emerged, leading to its formal establishment in 2018.   What started as an informal network has now grown into a vibrant global community of over 350+ members across 30 countries. At WomenExecs on Boards (WEoB), we champion inclusivity and progress, cultivating a unique culture of collaboration that empowers members to support one another in increasing women’s representation in board leadership.   Our diverse community includes seasoned directors and emerging leaders, all of whom have completed one or more of Harvard Business School’s Board Governance Programs, including Women on Boards: Succeeding as a Corporate Director, Corporate Directors Certificate, and Making Corporate Boards More Effective. Together, we are breaking barriers and enhancing our governance skills, paving the way for diverse leadership in corporate governance.   As we reflect on our achievements over the past eight years, we look forward to continuing to cultivate this dynamic community and drive positive change in boardrooms worldwide. #ElevatingImpact

🇫🇲 Women’s representation in business leadership is growing in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). PSDI has just released an update to its 2021 report, Leadership Matters: Benchmarking Women in Business Leadership in the Pacific. Leadership Matters 2024 finds that while the representation of women on boards has grown since 2021, the FSM has the largest share of boards in the Pacific with no women directors. On the other hand, the FSM is well above the regional average for women’s representation as chief executive officers, at 44% (4 out of 9 available positions). Last year, around this time, as part of the Pay It Forward Final Module of the Inclusive Leadership program for #AsahiEuropeInternational HUB employees, I committed to spreading the word to as many of my colleagues as possible 🌟 So I am very excited to share that, together with my colleague Amalia Sandu, we recently completed the delivery of the localized Inclusive Leadership program to Ursus Breweries, as part of our DE&I agenda! 🌟 This program was pivotal in fostering an environment of Cognizance, Collaboration, Curiosity, and Courage.
