The discussion draws on findings from a report entitled "Ownership Beyond Borders: New Research on S ESOPs with International Workers," which our Institute for the Study of Employee Ownership and Profit Sharing at the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations (SMLR) released earlier this year in conjunction with Employee-Owned S Corporations of America (ESCA). Based on interviews with executives from seven different companies that maintain Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) and that also employ significant numbers of non-U.S. workers, this report offers an unprecedented look at the technical, regulatory, and cultural challenges faced by firms that set out to share ownership with employees based abroad - and at the creative strategies that can be devised to overcome them.
