I ask this question of my writers more than any other. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 is never critical. It's the most powerful discovery tool in my coaching toolbox. I ask 𝘄𝗵𝘆 so that you go deeper to what you really mean. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 helps get writers unstuck when they've written themselves down a dead-end path. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 helps writers say what they really mean. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 unlocks a new angle for the entire argument. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 can do so much good, especially when you least expect it. --- Yesterday, I asked a writer 𝘄𝗵𝘆 about her new chapter structure. She had been working through a draft that just wasn't landing her argument, so we backed up, and she drew up an outline focused on reader learnings and impact - what did readers need to know and in what order - so that she could make sure she was only including what was needed when it was needed. A compelling new structure emerged that tightened her thesis and made her evidence so much more effective. Asking 𝘄𝗵𝘆 allowed me to push at the edges of it to see how well it held together. At first, the writer worried I wanted her to rearrange something. That I thought something was wrong with her new outline. I reiterated that I simply wanted to hear her 𝘄𝗵𝘆 for why she made her central structural choice - not that there was anything wrong with it. So she told me... Her answer spelled out the clearest argument for not only her chapter, but her book as a whole, that I had heard in our several months working together! Why should you write a book? Let's talk about it. If you have thoughts and experiences, you have a story. And once you become aware of the story as well as the thoughts and experiences that went into it, you know you can take it to readers. Which brings us to the next question that many authors in waiting ask: why would someone read that book? If you have to step back from yourself and observe your life, you will find learning moments that can turn into teachable moments. Therein lies the thought leader. There are many gaps that people face between where they are and where they want to be. That is a gap you can help them bridge with a relevant story. That is the gap where their reality is waiting for your story to come and change it. Here's how: If you have found a way to do something that so many struggle with; If you have been through a struggle and emerged a survivor with a story that can change reality for so many others; If you are passionate about what you do and constantly evolved how you do it Then you have a book inside you that can build and touch a reader group. You have a ready brand that can start with authoring a book - or be furthered by it. Think in terms of a practice, a product, a service, a consultancy - and so much more. Your story can do all this for you. And so much more for your reader, and prospective patron of your brand. Now, more than ever, we need storytelling to become normalized. Because healing, moving forward, stepping into the next higher version of yourself are just some of the things that one book can do. That is why I write. And that is why I book coach other writers to connect the dots. That is why I coax stories out of people using neuroscience and psychometrics. Because I take stories and their sheer power seriously. On October 19, 2010, just hours before my beloved grandfather passed away, he shared a piece of wisdom that I carry with me to this day: “Only you can write the path you’re willing to take.” These words became the foundation of my life philosophy and the driving force behind my business.
