How do you improve healthcare for millions of people across Europe? You build a network. A European Reference Network (ERN). Here’s what happens when you get it right: ✔ 100% of ERNs completed their evaluation successfully. ✔ 2+ million patients diagnosed and treated during the review period. ✔ Shared expertise across 24 networks and 836 healthcare providers, covering rare diseases that otherwise go unaddressed. However, the work doesn’t stop there. The recent evaluation revealed the power of collaboration but also highlighted key areas for improvement: 📌 Greater focus needed on patient-centred care—from integrating patient voices to gathering systematic feedback on their experience. 📌 An opportunity to refine quality and safety benchmarks by developing robust indicators for tracking healthcare outcomes. 📌 Expanding the use of clinical guidelines and tools, like the Clinical Patient Management System (CPMS), to foster consistent, evidence-based care. The future is clear: Strengthening these networks will not just help tackle rare diseases. It will also redefine what’s possible in cross-border healthcare. This was inspired by the extraordinary work of the ERN system evaluated under the EU4Health Programme. Congratulations to all involved! PS: To anyone leading or innovating in healthcare: How can we continue breaking barriers and driving impact for underserved communities? #HealthcareInnovation #EuropeanReferenceNetworks #CrossBorderCare #RareDiseases

What are true "patient partners"? How can we empower patients as active partners in health and care? The featured article defines the concept of "patient partners" as individuals with lived experiences who engage longitudinally and bidirectionally in healthcare decision-making for systemic change. The study highlights how patient partners differ from other forms of patient engagement due to their extended involvement and collaborative roles across various healthcare sectors. Highlights ✅ Definition and Scope of Patient Partners: The article differentiates patient partners from other engagement roles, emphasizing their long-term, reciprocal involvement in health systems aimed at systemic change rather than one-time contributions. ✅Gaps in Current Literature: Although patient partnerships have been widely studied, most research is descriptive and lacks a synthesis of impacts and outcomes. There is a need for more theory-driven and comparative studies to advance understanding. ✅Barriers to Consolidation: A major barrier to consolidating knowledge is the inconsistent terminology used to describe patient partners and their roles, which complicates efforts to compare and generalize findings across studies. ✅Future Research Directions: The review calls for a unified conceptual framework to differentiate between types of patient engagement and establish clear definitions.
