In our recommended read from the archives of "Samuhik Pahal," we share an interview with Dr Bindu Thirumalai. She is an academic who has been working closely with communities of practice (CoP) of teachers over the years. In this conversation, she reveals the potential of CoP in acting as important facilitators of teacher’s learning processes. She also discusses the conditions in which these can flourish. https://lnkd.in/gH3TKXhQ This article was first published in an issue of "Samuhik Pahal" that focused on the theme of continuous professional development (CPD) for teachers. It was guest edited by our partner Kanavu. Most of the articles in the issue focus on CPD in government schools and in the public education system. The learnings shared in these pieces may be relevant in your own contexts. These would help you in thinking about capacity building processes for the teachers you work with, and that of your colleagues who work with them. "We know from research that learners need to be taught and inducted into havruta learning practices so that they can create substantive and meaningful learning experiences for one another." Powered by the Hadar Institute, Pedagogy of Partnership (PoP) offers an extensive menu of trainings and resources for Jewish educators, schools, and families. PoP's innovative approach is guided by the core belief that how we learn is as important as what we learn. I was interviewed by RNZ about education, and our approach to improving outcomes, for all NZ kids. Talking about attendance is my jam, but I must say that the Government's 'Attendance action plan' is uninspiring! The way to improve attendance is not to get better at reporting and enforcement. This is already happening. Targeted approaches to lifting those who are struggling, supporting teachers, and empowering innovators in this space is the way to go. The Government is looking for 'quick wins' and these problems will take time, and the work of many. https://lnkd.in/gS3idPaQ

As the public school year launches, we at LHCC are encouraged by the progress made this year. While many of our students are behind on literacy and reading, the progress has been outstanding. My latest blogpost highlights the need for volunteers with patience and the skill of developing of daily habits among our students in tutoring and mentoring perseverance, measurable outcomes and graduation success. https://lnkd.in/eD_DbdDu
