The oldest finds of wine production have been found along the east shores of the Black Sea and dates back 8000 years. Since then, the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans have passed the gift of wine making further and further west in Europe, to present day. Nowadays, wine is produced indoors, and an indoor space can be seen as “a controlled environment” – separated from nature’s alterations and key for making success. However, producing wine inside puts firm requirements on the indoor climate. In our latest blog, our expert, Luca Zordan, Managing Director Swegon Italy, explains what an optimal indoor climate solution for a winery can look like. In the 18th century, the Marquis of Pombal introduced a pioneering vineyard classification system based on wine quality, influencing land value and ensuring the Porto wine’s reputation for excellence. The 19th and 20th centuries were periods of great challenges but also modernization. The phylloxera plague devastated vineyards across Europe, and the Douro was no exception. The response included restructuring vineyards with resistant rootstocks, safeguarding viticulture continuity. Simultaneously, technological innovations in winemaking and vineyard management contributed to raising the Douro wines’ quality standards. The Alto Douro Wine Region’s classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 acknowledged the region’s exceptional universal value. This status celebrates the extraordinary cultural landscape shaped by human activity and highlights the importance of preserving the winemaking heritage. Since then, international interest in the region has grown, with a significant increase in tourism and investment in wineries.

WHERE DOES THE VINEYARD STAND? For some years, wine tourism has expanded from the tasting room to the vineyard: age, density of vines, grape varieties. Over the years, the agricultural dimension has become increasingly distant from the consumer, and wine tourism is one of the keys to returning to the farming world, at least for a few hours, in safety and tranquillity. 🌳 From the point of view of the hiker, the vineyard is an intermediate point: it belongs to the winery and is private property, but at the same time, it belongs to the world of open air, 🌞 light, rain, and grass underfoot, without which it could not exist. #TheWineWalk is the ideal continuation of the vineyard towards the outside world rather than in the winery's direction. It is for those who want to read the route in the correct sequence: starting from an ideal point and through a path between past and present, arriving together at the winery—on foot, at a relaxed pace, without stress. The route is designed in advance, but the guests are an important and unpredictable part. You never know beforehand whether the most exciting part of the itinerary is an abandoned church, a century-old plant, or a bougainvillea blossom. 🌺 And that is when you get to the vineyard: to the ripening fruit assisted by man before disappearing into the cellar between barrels of different materials and nature. From there to the tasting, the step is short. 🍷 Cheers! #tourism #foodandwinetourism #hiking #winetours #wineexperience #pdowines #winelovers

Ever wondered why wine connoisseurs whisper the name "Wachau Valley" with reverence? Let's uncork the truth about this Austrian gem. Nestled along the Danube River, the Wachau Valley is not just another picturesque European locale; it's a viticultural legacy. Despite its acclaim, some still hold onto outdated notions that the region is inaccessible or exclusively for the elite oenophile. Let's clarify a few things. Firstly, the idea that Wachau's wines are only for the well-versed is as misleading as a corked Riesling. Yes, the wines here are exceptional, but they're crafted for everyone to appreciate. The vintners are passionate educators, eager to share their knowledge with visitors of all levels of wine expertise. Secondly, the perception that a trip to Wachau is complicated or requires intricate planning is far from reality. As a travel agent specializing in luxury small group travel and river cruises, I can attest to the seamless experience that awaits. A river cruise through the Wachau Valley offers an intimate, relaxed journey through rolling vineyards and medieval towns, with the convenience of unpacking just once. Lastly, let's address the myth that Wachau is solely about the wine. While the Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are undoubtedly stars, the region's cultural landscape is rich with monasteries, castles, and markets, offering a full-bodied experience beyond the vine. If you're looking to explore the Wachau Valley, whether it's on a river cruise or a small ship ocean cruise that docks nearby, the key is to embrace the journey with an open mind and palate. Ready to raise a glass to adventure? Share your thoughts or questions below, and let's start planning your next unforgettable sip and sail experience. #WachauValley #WineTravel #RiverCruises schedule a call

Bordeaux's strategic response to climate change marks a significant evolution in its storied wine-making tradition. In 2019, new grape varieties were introduced into the Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur appellations, demonstrating a proactive commitment to sustainability and innovation. This move not only preserves Bordeaux wines' signature elegance but also addresses the challenges posed by global warming, such as shorter vine growing cycles and increased hydric stress. Bordeaux is setting a new standard for adaptive viticulture by integrating varieties like Arinarnoa, Castets, Marselan, and Touriga Nacional for reds and Alvarinho and Liliorila for whites. This blend of tradition and innovation ensures the region remains a benchmark for quality and resilience in the wine industry. It showcases a dynamic approach to maintaining excellence in the face of climate uncertainty. >> https://lnkd.in/dmJDF-YG #GreatWineCapitals #BordeauxWine #ClimateChange #InnovationInWine #SustainableViticulture Best Of Wine Tourism - Bordeaux Wendy Narby
