Look who's talking!
Great to see Wilkinson Butler Chair Peter Wilkinson join Nine's Today Show this morning to reveal his "Australia's Top Communicators 2025" list.
From Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Michele Bullocks's masterclass in making economics accessible to the contrasting challenges of political leaders Jim Chalmers and Peter Dutton, Peter's analysis highlights the importance of good communication, regardless of your audience.
And yes, he also points out what bad communication advice can look like.

Welcome back. Well, a lot of Aussies like to think they have the gift of the gab. But who could really talk the talk? Well, Australia's communicators of the year have been named and the list includes politicians and corporate giants. And a few of them might surprise you. For more, we're joined by leading communication firm Wilkinson Butlers chair Peter Wilkinson. Good morning, Peter. Now, Peter. Morning. RBI Governor Michelle Bullock has taken our communicator of the year. Let's take a look at her in action. We need to keep rates restrictive for the time being, the board needs to be confident that inflation is moving sustainably towards the target and we need to see more progress on underlying inflation. Didn't seem overly impressive why she'd be now that actually top spot, wasn't it? I think that actually represents her because she's actually a beautiful communicator. She's the first female governor of the Reserve Bank and she's been tasked with making macroeconomics interesting, explaining why we have to suffer higher interest rates when the government really wants her to lower interest rates. And we all want it done. And she what she's been able to do is turn. Macroeconomics, the complicated explanation of why interest rates have to be high into everyday language. And she's done it in a very authentic way, in a way that all of us can understand. And I think Australians generally trust her because of that. Yes, I like the way she talks and she's an economist. She's not, she's not used to standing in front of her media concisely. And it doesn't like a burden too. Yeah, we, we all have. Responsibilities. But think of her responsibilities, and people are angry, aren't there? That the interest rates are staying. Well, I think of the pressure that she's under when she goes home at night. Does she sleep well? Yeah. How? What's techniques for managing stress? Hmm. Why is her hair still not Gray? You know, all this. Ohh. I'd never ask a woman that. Peter. No. Peter is another Peter. Dutton and Jim Chalmers are included in this list. Let's hear from them. This is a responsible set of books which reflects the very substantial progress that we have made cleaning up the budget. He's lost control of the budget. Ask yourself this question, are you better off today than you were 2 1/2 years ago? Why? Why would they change now? OK, so Jim Chalmers first, actually he's, he's in a lot of difficulty at the moment because of the mid year outlook. But what he's done so far this year, he's he's for me the best communicator in the Labour Party by our country in the. Federal Labour Party and he's been able to, he's very, a very easy conversationalist. He doesn't get rattled. He keeps his answers relatively short. He talks simple language. The difficulty he's got now is we've got a massive deficit that is going to weigh him down between now and the election and that the it's just a reality When you're communicating. You can't put lipstick on a pig. He's gotta spin his way. Through the next few months. And I think he's going to be up against the other good communicator you mentioned, which is Peter Dutton. And Peter Dutton has done the impossible. No one anticipated at the beginning of the Labour governments term that Peter Dutton would be a contender for the top job at the end of the first election. All right Peter, everyone loves a blooper. We can't let you go without talking about some of the blunders. Let's have a look at one from the former woolly CEO. Yeah, No, I think I'm done, guys. You know, I I do this with good intent. You know I don't do this with bad intent, right? You're walking out. Really. No, no, no. Can we just talk to Brad for a second? Let me just have a minute. The walk off that right. That was a clanger to start with. He should never have done the interview. He should never have turned. I don't know why he turned up on Four Corners. He was gonna get beaten up because it was to do with pushing up prices for these new what was coming to sit down and then, right. Ohh, this is it. We're just gonna exchange pleasantries and then leave. And. And then it's. If he's gonna walk out, he should keep walking. Yes, He shouldn't have. There was this whole thing that they extended it out where he was persuaded to sit back down again. It was just a complete nonsense. That's what you call in television, a car crash. And we love watching. Yeah. And he lost his job. Yes, he might. He says he was gonna go anyway, and that's true. But when you pay. So he. He was on millions of dollars. Yeah, he was on a really big wicket. And he had to balance suppliers, you know, the farmers and the people who make lollies and biscuits and all that, and the consumers and his stakeholders, the people who own the company, the shareholders. And Yep, he. Made a mess of it. Yes, he did make commit. Peter Wilkinson. We have to go, but that's great. I love this list. Thank you for coming. Thanks for sharing it with pleasure.
Congratulations Peter on your continued success and insightful contributions to the field of communication.
