As my husband Kamil Beffa knows, I love train so much more than his car to go on week-ends or holidays... Not only is rail travel fast and comfortable, but with one of the lowest per-km carbon footprints of any transport mode, both freight and passenger rail must be key components of any sustainable transport mix. But are we there yet? Back in March, the Groupe SNCF European Affairs Director Jérémie Pélerin warned that in its current state, “rail will not be able to play the role it could play in the decarbonization of transport.” What’s the issue? I see three challenges: 1️⃣ Missing infrastructure: Between 1995 and 2020, the length of European railways shrank by 6.5%, and 2,5000 stations closed. 2️⃣ Service availability: in a recent survey, 52% of French respondents reported that they did not consider train services reliable or punctual. 3️⃣ Fragmented ecosystems: Passenger and freight networks remain highly siloed, hampering effective transformation. Systemic change is needed and I believe virtual twins have a key role to play. Through virtual twins, we can simplify infrastructure delivery, unite disparate stakeholders around a single source of truth, and optimize rail operations from end-to-end. 𝐄𝐏𝐅 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐳 𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐔-𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐨 #InnoTrans2024 EPF had the pleasure of participating in the EU-Rail train journey to Berlin for InnoTrans 2024. 🚆 As part of the event, we organised an interactive quiz that brought together experts from across Europe’s rail sector. The quiz featured 19 questions on topics such as: accessibility, passenger rights, innovation, and cross-border rail travel. With a fun, collaborative format, the quiz encouraged teamwork and sparked meaningful discussion on key passenger-focused challenges. Addressing passenger needs like reliability, ease of use, and value for money is essential to driving a modal shift towards rail as the core of sustainable, multimodal mobility. As I leave Berlin, here are my take-aways from the largest International Trade Fair for Transport Technology : 👉🏼 Digital transformation is in full swing : our industry is going full stream ahead to make rail networks and infrastructures smarter, safer and more automated to enhance passenger experience, optimize performance and increase sustainability. 👉🏼 In the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa region, with rapid population growth and urbanization, connecting people, cities, and ports is becoming even more crucial.
