𝐄𝐏𝐅 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐳 𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐔-𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐨 #InnoTrans2024 EPF had the pleasure of participating in the EU-Rail train journey to Berlin for InnoTrans 2024. 🚆 As part of the event, we organised an interactive quiz that brought together experts from across Europe’s rail sector. The quiz featured 19 questions on topics such as: accessibility, passenger rights, innovation, and cross-border rail travel. With a fun, collaborative format, the quiz encouraged teamwork and sparked meaningful discussion on key passenger-focused challenges. The Solidarity Transport Hub, also referred to as the Central Communication Port, is a £7bn Polish megaproject revamping the transport networks of Warsaw. A major European capital city is getting a £7billion makeover that will create new infrastructure, including building a new airport from scratch. A new airport will be built 25 miles southwest of the capital and will include two runways, terminal buildings, shops, parking, and connecting roads. The Central Communication Port website says: "The general vision is to create an airport which is prudent, well planned, properly designed, efficient for airlines and comfortable for passengers. An airport which has sustainability written in its roots and at the end of the day delivers value for money, while creating a world-class facility. The CPK will commercially extend beyond its borders and create cohesive space for commerce and transport." The new railway lines will make international travel even quicker and easier.  The staggering new megaproject will also construct 1,119 miles of new high-speed railway lines, as well as modernising 1,491 miles of existing lines. The new railway network will be comprised of 10 major corridors and create a new controlled-access highway network connection. This will significantly cut travel times, making Warsaw more connected with its surrounding areas. The journey to Warsaw Central Railway station will only be 15 minutes, and 25 minutes to Łódź Fabryczna railway station. It will also make international travel easier and less reliant on air travel as a high-speed connection to Frankfurt, Germany, is also in the works, meaning it will take less than 3.5 hours to get to Berlin from the megaproject. As my husband Kamil Beffa knows, I love train so much more than his car to go on week-ends or holidays... Not only is rail travel fast and comfortable, but with one of the lowest per-km carbon footprints of any transport mode, both freight and passenger rail must be key components of any sustainable transport mix. But are we there yet? Back in March, the Groupe SNCF European Affairs Director Jérémie Pélerin warned that in its current state, “rail will not be able to play the role it could play in the decarbonization of transport.” What’s the issue? I see three challenges: 1️⃣ Missing infrastructure: Between 1995 and 2020, the length of European railways shrank by 6.5%, and 2,5000 stations closed. 2️⃣ Service availability: in a recent survey, 52% of French respondents reported that they did not consider train services reliable or punctual. 3️⃣ Fragmented ecosystems: Passenger and freight networks remain highly siloed, hampering effective transformation. Systemic change is needed and I believe virtual twins have a key role to play. Through virtual twins, we can simplify infrastructure delivery, unite disparate stakeholders around a single source of truth, and optimize rail operations from end-to-end. THE CLOSURE OF BROMMA AIRPORT SHOWS THE URGENT NEED FOR HIGH-SPEED RAIL IN SWEDEN The closure of Bromma airport, coupled with SAS’s shift in focus toward Copenhagen’s Kastrup, exposes a critical gap in Sweden’s national connectivity strategy that cannot be addressed by aviation alone. This development should serve as a wake-up call for Sweden to prioritize investment in high-speed rail infrastructure, which would provide a long-term, sustainable solution to the connectivity challenges posed by changing aviation trends. As several southern regions risk losing direct air links to Stockholm, and as Copenhagen increasingly asserts itself as the main Scandinavian travel hub, high-speed rail offers an opportunity to maintain the cohesion of Sweden’s transport network. It would bridge the distances between key southern cities like Malmö, Växjö, and Jönköping, and the capital, making these areas economically viable and accessible without relying on flights. Since over 70% of Sweden’s energy comes from the green energy sources, investing in high-speed rail would help Sweden meet its environmental goals by providing a greener option than domestic flights. A strong rail network would keep travelers from needing to route through Copenhagen, helping Stockholm stay the main hub for travel in Sweden. This would protect regional economies and strengthen Stockholm’s role in European transport. 📢 UK transport services need long-term planning to be implemented immediately to meet passengers’ needs 📢 Today we’ve published a new report that explores how we develop transport networks that meet passengers’ needs and make it easier for them to choose sustainable travel options. The report, titled Making Transport Fit for the Future, has been published as part of our thought-leadership programme, Interchange. It’s the result of a collaboration between the Museum, leading engineering consultancy firm Mott MacDonald, international law firm Gowling WLG and Hitachi Rail. Calling for long-term planning in the form of three building blocks, it highlights travellers’ needs for affordable, reliable, convenient, safe and accessible transport systems. The report points to national and international case studies that demonstrate success stories and key learnings. These include Transport for London’s Active Travel scheme to promote cycling and walking, Montpellier’s free public transport initiative and First Bus’s use of AI to enhance reliability and efficiency of public transport systems. #TransportFitForTheFuture

Earlier this summer, the long-awaited “Three Nations” #train project launched, linking the cities of Aachen, Maastricht, and Liège via the new RE18 route, known as Limax. This #initiative, aimed at facilitating #international travel and strengthening cultural ties, became a reality thanks to the efforts of Arriva Nederland, Nederlandse Spoorwegen, and NMBS-SNCB. Originally planned for launch back in 2018, #technical delays in upgrading #trains postponed the project for several years. The need to implement #ETCS digital #signalling to meet Belgian standards was the main reason for these delays. Finally, after lengthy negotiations and obtaining necessary approvals, “Three Nations” was launched in late June 2024. Today, trains operate along a 78 km route with 12 intermediate stops, offering passengers convenience and cross-border accessibility. However, a unified ticketing system has not yet been fully implemented, potentially requiring travellers to purchase additional tickets for travel within Belgium. The launch of the “Three Nations” project underscores Europe’s increasing focus on developing cross-border #railway routes as a #sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to #road and air travel. This step will not only simplify travelers’ lives but also contribute to strengthening cultural and economic ties between countries.
