I've been speaking a lot recently about how important flexibility is, in life and in OT. No one really tells you just how adaptable you’ll need to be, not just day to day, but often moment to moment. Working with clients means thinking on your feet, adjusting plans on the fly, and sometimes coming up with entirely new approaches—all because every individual and situation is so unique. In OT, no two sessions look the same. One day, you’re helping someone build confidence in their mobility, and the next, you’re finding ways to support a client in managing sensory sensitivities in a busy world. Sometimes, you even walk in with a carefully planned session, only to realise the client needs something completely different in that moment. That’s when the flexibility of OT truly shines. It’s about recognising the cues, being open to change, and trusting your skills to find what works best in the moment. It’s a reminder that occupational therapy isn’t about rigid structures—it’s about being resourceful, adaptable, and ready to meet people where they are. In a way, that flexibility is what makes OT so powerful. It’s what allows us to tailor our support to each client’s unique journey, focusing on their strengths and needs as they are in real time. And in the end, it’s those spontaneous, on-the-spot adaptations that often lead to the most meaningful breakthroughs. For those of us in OT, adaptability isn’t just a skill—it’s a mindset. How has flexibility shaped your journey in OT? #OccupationalTherapy #OTSkills #OTLife

During #mentalhealthawareness week 2024 let’s focus on YOU. The OT, whether you work alone, manage a busy clinic, work in a diverse setting or are part of a great team. Occupational Therapist have so many therapeutic tools that they use with clients. No matter where you work, each OT also uses ‘therapeutic use of self’. This makes us all unique in our approach, how we use the tools in our toolbox and how we communicate with those around you. So, let’s acknowledge that we bring a lot of ourselves to work. OT supervision with me places YOU at the centre. When we access ‘therapeutic use of self’ we must remember that we also need a place to managed our responses to different therapeutic and work dynamics. A space to reflect and evaluate. To recognise challenges and successes. To recognise if we are feeling overwhelmed or stressed. To have open discussion about the things that make us feel vulnerable, when we doubt or question ourselves. When we feel like things are out of balance between life and work. OT supervision protects your wellbeing with a safe space to offload. To reflect, to learn from mistakes and successes and to grow. If you are looking to invest in OT supervision, where your wellbeing and life work balance is central to the discussion. Then comment below, or message me. I provide 1:1 and group supervision. Let’s have a cuppa and a chat. #OTsupervision #wellbeing #burnout #occupationaltherapy #schoolbasedot #clinicot #independentot #diverseot
