The American dream just got a smidge closer — for Indians, maybe. The US Mission in India has just added 2.5 lakh additional visa appointments for Indian travellers, tourists, skilled workers and students. In 2023, the US had already issued over 1.4 lakh student visas to Indians, more than in any other country in the world. Already in 2024, more than 1.2 million Indians have travelled to the US, a 35 per cent increase since 2023. At least 6 million Indians already have a non-immigrant visa to visit the US. Meanwhile, India’s reciprocation is designed to help its own tourism industry as well: In a first-of-its-kind initiative to bring more foreign tourists to India, the government will allow “friends” of the Indian diaspora to get free visas. Up to five foreign nationals nominated by OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholders on a special website will be eligible for the gratis e-visa. India is currently reducing visa approvals, especially for tourists, which may soon be halted entirely, creating significant challenges for students and business travelers. At present, we are witnessing a significant reduction in visa approvals from India, with tourist visas almost coming to a standstill. It appears that these restrictions may soon extend further. This poses a considerable challenge, particularly for students and business professionals, as the majority of European embassies are based in India. A halt in Indian visa services could indirectly disrupt access to Europe. While medical travel may still find alternatives in nearby countries like Thailand, the larger impact will be felt by students and entrepreneurs. Some may label me as overly favorable towards India, but the reality is that until we achieve a level of wealth and self-sufficiency comparable to India, shutting down visa access will likely lead to more losses than gains for us. #VisaPolicy #GlobalMobility #BusinessTravel #StudentVisa #InternationalRelations #EconomicImpact #TravelRestrictions #IndiaVisa #BusinessChallenges #EducationAbroad #CrossBorderTrade #GlobalBusiness #StudyAbroad #Entrepreneurship #VisaUpdates #samiulhasan

The United States has increased the number of visa slots available for Indian applicants by 250,000: The US Mission in India has announced an increase of 250,000 visa appointments for Indian travelers, thereby enhancing accessibility for tourists, professionals, and students. This initiative is designed to simplify the interview process, promote travel, and strengthen the relationship between the US and India. Last year, more than one million nonimmigrant visa applications were processed, with an emphasis on family reunification, education, and tourism. As a result, Indian applicants, particularly students, skilled workers, and families, will experience reduced wait times. This initiative also addresses existing backlogs amid a growing interest in US visas from India. In 2024, there was a notable rise in Indian travel to the US, with over six million individuals holding visas. Indian students represent a significant segment of this demographic, with over 140,000 visas issued in 2023. The Indian American community has expressed appreciation for the additional visa slots; however, challenges remain, leading to proposed solutions such as video appointments to improve efficiency and manage backlogs.
