The American dream just got a smidge closer — for Indians, maybe. The US Mission in India has just added 2.5 lakh additional visa appointments for Indian travellers, tourists, skilled workers and students. In 2023, the US had already issued over 1.4 lakh student visas to Indians, more than in any other country in the world. Already in 2024, more than 1.2 million Indians have travelled to the US, a 35 per cent increase since 2023. At least 6 million Indians already have a non-immigrant visa to visit the US. Meanwhile, India’s reciprocation is designed to help its own tourism industry as well: In a first-of-its-kind initiative to bring more foreign tourists to India, the government will allow “friends” of the Indian diaspora to get free visas. Up to five foreign nationals nominated by OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholders on a special website will be eligible for the gratis e-visa.
