New and emerging tech is an increasingly dominant theme across Geneva’s many international organisations. The UK is working together with civil society, industry and international bodies to embrace the opportunities offered by these new technologies, but also to mitigate the risks. In disarmament, we are seeking to bring experts together to discuss the security implications of rapid developments in biosciences; we are discussing possible measures to address Autonomous Weapons Systems; and, we are leading efforts to define norms of responsible behaviour in space. These are complex and sometimes divisive issues. But in my first few weeks in Geneva, I have sensed a growing determination to find a way through the current deadlocks. That will remain the UK’s focus.

“The bedrock of our digital future” We had a really important discussion at the UN Human Rights Council today on new technologies, AI, and the digital divide with some great speakers including Doreen Bogdan-Martin Daren Tang Audrey Azoulay and Amandeep Gill As Doreen Bogdan-Martin said, human rights need to be the bedrock of our digital future, starting with the Global Digital Compact that’s been negotiated in New York. But how do we best ensure that happens?

Human rights abuses remain a growing global problem, with an estimated 21.3 million people living under forced labor in 2021. Efforts to transition to a low-carbon economy could exacerbate this issue if not managed carefully. Integrating a human-rights focus into core business strategies is crucial. In working to ensure an ethical supply chain, companies will reinforce the organization’s values, protect the company from potential brand damage, and increase the resilience of the supply chain. In the new BCG article, "Why Companies Must Address Human Rights in Their Supply Chains" by Natasha Peacock and Tim Mohin, discover how businesses can protect human rights while also benefiting their performance: https://lnkd.in/ekkqwXPD Learn more about how companies are aligning their strategic objectives with societal needs in the new articles, "The Power of Socially Transformative Businesses," here: https://lnkd.in/ev_Z66tY.
