With a few days to go before the UK’s General Election polling day, "Women’s voices and issues are not being heard in the UK general election”. That's the finding of Luba Kassova's article published in the industry leading Press Gazette at the end of last month. Amongst other resources, Luba used the newly developed AKAS UK General Election Media Tracker that has monitored the UK media's use of nearly 700 terms in this general election campaign compared to the 2017 and 2019 election campaigns. The tracker is powered by The GDELT Project and developed by Petar Todorov and myself. Luba explained that "Overall, GE [General Election] coverage featuring a raft of gender-related terms of importance to women has declined from 0.63% of all GE-related coverage during 2017’s campaign to 0.37% currently.” And she makes a number of recommendations on how to improve coverage in relation to the structural disadvantages that women face in health, safety, pay and leadership/power. This advice is relevant for this general election campaign and for the coverage of the next government. Women’s voices and issues should be heard in our politics. Asian Americans are the fastest-growing voting bloc in the nation, and #AsianAmericansRise President Wendy Nguyen is convinced that their vote could be decisive in swinging the 2024 presidential election. “Regardless of whoever our community votes for, I think it’s important that our community votes … I really believe we can be the margin of victory in all of the key places in this election cycle.” This is why Asian Americans Rise is embarking on an eight-week registration drive to reach 300,000 voter-eligible Asian Americans across seven swing states. Voter-eligible Asian Americans have more than doubled in the past decade, their numbers in key battleground states like Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania increasingly hard to ignore. And all though Asian American voters tend to lean Democratic, a majority are naturalized citizens not married to one side, having not been raised on either platform. No side can take this electorate for granted, with issues and values key to unlocking their support. AAPI Data reported earlier this year that 79 percent of their 1,172 Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander respondents wouldn’t vote for a candidate who did not reflect their views on racism and discrimination. Asian American voter turnout and registration have historically been significantly lower than that of the general population. The Asian American electorate turned out at 49 and 60 percent for the 2016 and 2020 election cycles (compared to 61 and 67 percent). The Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas' (DDIA) latest research dives deep into how U.S. Latinos consume and perceive online content, especially in light of the upcoming 2024 elections. While most Latinos don't blindly believe everything they see online, the concerning part is the widespread uncertainty, making them vulnerable to misleading narratives. Let's focus on fostering trust in credible sources, promoting media literacy, and ensuring informed decision-making in upcoming elections and beyond. Want to dive deeper? Even here in Australia we’re privy to the raging debate leading up to the US elections regarding candidates. Kamala Harris has faced atrocious, but sadly unsurprising, scrutiny in relation to appearance, voice, laugh, mannerisms, heritage, relationship status, experience, and expertise. It’s a global issue, highlighted previously and all too often with politicians including former Finnish PM Sanna Marin and former NZ PM, Jacinda Adern. Lean In has crafted a helpful resource for those wishing to address and respond to the stereotypes and biased reactions women running for office or any leadership role face. It's timely as we also prepare for local council elections here in Victoria. This includes responses to statements like: ➡️ She’s so emotional. ➡️ She’s too aggressive. ➡️ She doesn’t have enough experience. ➡️ I just don’t like her. ➡️ She’s too ambitious. The best advice? Take a moment to consider your own responses to women running for office (or any leadership role!) and encourage your family and friends to do the same. If someone makes a critical comment, try asking, ‘I’m interested—what leads you to that perspective?’" For more information regarding gender bias in elections check out: https://lnkd.in/gjeVcpMu #getoutthebias

This Sunday, Mexico will hold a groundbreaking election characterised by three unique aspects: 1️⃣ It will be the largest election in Mexican history, with over 20,000 public offices at the federal, state, and local levels on the ballot. Voter turnout is expected to exceed 97 million people. 2️⃣ For the first time, two women are the leading contenders to become Mexico's first female president. 3️⃣ It has become the most violent election season in recent Mexican history. Since 2023 September, at least 701 incidents of violence have occurred, including 225 killings related to the elections: https://lnkd.in/eGie7ZDv Three critical issues are at the heart of these elections: the representation of historically marginalised groups in positions of power, violence against journalists, and the spread of disinformation and hate speech online. Read our latest blog post from Maria Fernanda Zistecatl to learn more. ⬇
