As UX professionals, we have a responsibility to create products and services that not only meet user needs but also minimize environmental impact. My most recent article is on sustainable ux and has been posted on the UX Collective. Key Takeaways: -Sustainability in UX goes beyond "green" design – it's about considering the entire lifecycle of a product or service. -Digital Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and behavioral research can help us identify opportunities to reduce environmental impact. -UX practitioners play a role in driving innovation, educating stakeholders, and creating a community of practice for sustainable design. Tuesday - It's time for slightly provocative thoughts on UX strategy. Human-centered design is not the same as human-first design. In the context of discussions about sustainability and holistic approaches, the call for a move away from user-centered or human-centered design comes up again and again... because there you would only design what's best for people and not for the environment. That may be true for a broad term like "user-centered design" (whatever that may be), but it does not apply to human-centered design. With human-centered design, the focus is on people and their needs IN THEIR ENVIRONMENT as users of an interactive system... right up to the evaluation of interactive systems by HUMANS. "Human-first Design" would be like "all for the user and we don't care about anything else... not the environment, not other stakeholders, not about sound evaluation". In Human-centered Design, vou cannot leave out the aspects of sustainability, since they address essential aspects of the human social, ecological and economical environments. It is a human need that we have an environment worth living in, it is a human need that we have a strong society, it is a human need that we have equality (to name just a few of the 17 Sustainability Development Goals). Sustainability is a human need. Only from humans! A hedgehog has no concept of this, just as a forest, a mountain or a planet has no concept of it.. Nature is and will be. We can shape, protect, develop and, alas, also destroy it. It is always the human being who has to make decisions. It is high time to accept that human-centered design has to be sustainable design. Human-centered Design is the holistic appoach to the challenges we face. It's international standard ISO 9241-210 already addresses sustainability in a dedicated chapter and we are working hard to strengthen the relationship of professional work in the field of UX / Human-centered Design with sustainability. 🚀 Today, I had the opportunity to attend the Artisanal Convergence 2024 conference focused on UX Design! It was an insightful experience that broadened my understanding of the latest trends and innovations in the design industry. A few key takeaways that stood out to me were: • 📱 User Experience (UX) is crucial for creating products that genuinely resonate with users. It’s about making complex things simple and intuitive. • 🎯 Human-centered design is at the forefront of UX. Always put the user’s needs first, and solutions will naturally follow. • 💡 Collaboration is key in UX. A successful design process involves the collective effort of designers, developers, and product managers. The energy in the room was contagious, and the speakers shared some incredible insights. It’s always inspiring to connect with like-minded professionals and gain fresh perspectives.

✨ UX in Everyday Life – Insights from the Chicago Bean! 🌟 As a designer, I find inspiration everywhere—even in places as unexpected as the Chicago Bean (Cloud Gate)! 🫘 Standing before this iconic piece of public art, I’m reminded of how user experience is all around us, not just in digital interfaces. The Bean invites us to interact, reflect, and see ourselves from new angles—literally! Here’s what it taught me about UX design: 🔍 Reflection & Interaction: The Bean’s mirrored surface lets users see themselves, the skyline, and others from infinite perspectives. In UX, it’s essential to design experiences that reflect users' needs, behaviors, and desires—offering them unique, personal engagement. 👥 Inclusivity & Accessibility: It’s a public, open space where anyone can interact. Similarly, great UX should be inclusive, accessible, and welcoming for all users, regardless of their background or abilities. 🎨 Simple but Engaging: The Bean’s minimalistic yet impactful design shows how simplicity can drive engagement. In UX, simplicity shouldn’t sacrifice depth—it should enhance user interaction. Next time you’re out exploring, remember that UX is everywhere. ✨ Where do you find your design inspiration? #UXDesign #EverydayInspiration #ChicagoBean #DesignThinking #UXInspiration

Now, I know you might look at a conference like UX Copenhagen and think "that's not for me, I don't do UX, what even is UX*?" But let me offer a counter to that, especially given this years theme of Degrowth and Consumerism, and say that if you work in sustainability, if you're designing systems, if you're making products, if you build tech, if you care about how people interact - you'll get something out of this conference. Helle Martens and the team bring together an incredible, truly diverse group of speakers covering a crazy array of topics. I spoke at this conference in 2020 and the community and organisation is wonderful. So if you're looking for an inspiring way to spend your time next week there is still time to get tickets - both in person and online. Link in the comments. I'll be in the virtual audience, lapping up the content and giving myself the opportunity for some reflection and learning. Come join me, you won't regret it. #UXCopenhagen * User Experience (UX) refers to any interaction a user has with a product. While it’s often associated with digital products like software, websites, apps etc, the principles of UX design can be applied to various domains beyond technology.

Rethink. Redesign. Unlearn UX To move forward as designers, sometimes we have to let go, of old habits, outdated beliefs, biases we didn’t know we had. Unlearning in UX isn’t just about clearing our minds; it’s about creating space for creativity, inclusivity, and truly user-centered design. Ready to rethink what you know? 1. Challenge what you know Take a step back and question the design habits you’ve always followed. 2. Look for new perspectives Learn from people with different backgrounds to broaden your view. 3. Focus on the community Think about how your design can help and include everyone, not just the individual. 4. Embrace creativity Don’t just look for the “right” answer—explore multiple ideas and possibilities. 5. Check your influences Reflect on whose opinions have shaped your design approach. Small changes like these can really help make your designs more inclusive and innovative!
