A study by the Myers-Briggs Company reveals that managers spend 𝟰+ 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 managing conflict—double the amount in 2008. According to the CPP Global Human Capital Report, 𝟴𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁, leading to a full day per month lost to interpersonal challenges. This contributes to $𝟯𝟱𝟵 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 in lost productivity, weakened culture, and critical talent loss. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗺𝗮: 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁 Leaders often ask, “𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘴?” While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, understanding the 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁-𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝘀—based on assertiveness and cooperativeness—can help. Coaching equips leaders to assess which mode best fits each situation and develop the skills to deploy it effectively. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗪𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝘀 Though we can access all five modes, most of us favor specific ones. Overusing or underusing certain modes limits effectiveness and can lead to impasse or burnout during negotiations. 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Focusing only on behavior yields short-term results. Lasting change requires developing 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗘𝗜)—a blend of attitudes and behaviors that distinguishes top performers. Leaders with high EI better manage themselves and their relationships, leading to improved conflict resolution and stronger team dynamics. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸 Sustainable growth happens when leaders align the right attitudes with effective behaviors. By understanding how thoughts, emotions, and actions connect, leaders can: • Influence conversations strategically. • Flex between conflict modes as needed. • Build healthier, more collaborative teams. 𝗜𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆? Does your team need to better understand and leverage the five conflict-handling modes? Are they relying on certain modes that lead to burnout or stalled negotiations?
