Safety pundits and military personnel will point out that in emergency situations we do not respond to procedures but by our training. The classic fight or flight response is controlled by our suboptimal parasympathetic nervous system. Oddly nobody talks about the third option which I just experienced at breakfast in the quiet lounge after a good night at my girlfriend Mary Ott's place. This is the so-called freeze response. Freeze response is a legitimate mechanism borne of eons of evolution whereby it is not clear that either a flight or fight response are even worth trying. so we freeze. The idea is that we don't have any control over the situation a hand and by freezing, we lay low and hope for the danger to pass. Our brains just lock up. This can happen in the initial moments of a sudden emergency, e.g., if an engine in a plane suddenly dies moments after liftoff. Or on my case when a video I am watching at max volume about the annealing process suddenly blasts in the breakfast lounge area. I thought about running but I just locked up. I got looks but fighting ppl in response didn't seem like it would mitigate the hazard. I froze. For what seemed like hours. I had no idea how to operate my phone. We've all endured the freeze response. This anecdote should be a warning. If it happens to you, good luck not being attacked by fellow travelers. Identify three sights and sounds to break your frozen cognitive blue screen. It's a legitimate technique! Godspeed fellow travelers in the cause.

Physical Employment Standards (PES) are physical fitness tests or assessments used in physically demanding occupations that are derived from the job-role that an individual performs. As such, when the physical requirements of a job-role are the same for all employees or personnel within that organisation, then the PES related to these roles should be the same irrespective of a person’s sex, race or age. Adopting PES provides an organisation with a framework to evaluate employees role-related physical capability. The assessments or tests in a PES can be used to identify if individuals have the physical capability to perform job-tasks and inform strategies to improve the safety and performance such as training, equipment development or ergonomic interventions. These actions have the potential to optimise the job-person fit to improve workplace health, safety and performance. Frameworks for developing PES have been described in the technical and scientific peer reviewed literature and applied internationally across a range of different occupations. This research has resulted in the development of PES internationally for organisations including the military, fire and rescue services, police forces, ambulance services, oil and gas industry and maritime search and rescue. You respond to an MVC as a part of an initial first response team (no entrapment or extrication needed). An ambulance also responds, along with the EMS agency's Shift Supervisor. The Shift Supervisor requests that you provide care to the patient in "that" car (not the one you are walking toward). Do you follow the request (orders) of the EMS Shift Supervisor? Does it make a difference if that Shift Supervisor is an EMS Battalion/District Chief? Does your FD have a policy outlining these situations? (Don't read into this too much or worry about every possinle nuance of scene details ... I am looking more for your response related to the title of the EMS officer.)
