New study finds that #copper cannot be mined quickly enough to keep up with current U.S. policy guidelines for the country’s #energy transition. To meet the copper needs of electrifying the global vehicle fleet, as many as six new large copper mines must be brought online annually over the next several decades. I was amused when I recently learned that Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), traditionally a coal-producing giant, is aspiring to become a power generation company. On the flip side, NTPC, a renowned power generator, is aspiring to acquire coal fields and set up plants right at the source. The rationale? It’s simple yet ingenious—they no longer want to ferry coal and ash back and forth between the coalfields and power plants. Instead, they find it far more efficient to transmit power over long distances than move heavy materials. This shift in strategy is a perfect example of how old models are evolving with fresh thinking. This got me wondering—are we looking at the world differently today? Are we challenging traditional approaches in our own industries? #Innovation #StrategicThinking #EnergySector #BusinessTransformation #LogisticsOptimization

Copper is the heart of clean energy Copper is the metal of electrification, and #electrification is much of what the energy transition is all about. It is forecasted that copper #demand nearly doubling to 50 million metric tons by 2035. By 2050, demand will reach more than 53 million metric tons. The generation of #cleanenergy from #solar and #wind has a copper usage that is typically 4-6 times more than #fossilfuels. #Electricvehicles rely heavily on copper for the motor coil that drives the engine. one interesting aspect of copper is that it is 100% recyclable, which makes it a very green #material of choice for the #CircularEconomy. right now millions of tonnes of copper is recycled each year to maximize its utility to future generations. for more information:https://lnkd.in/eNJpKU4g #energytransition #energy #mining #climatetransition #climatechange #electricity #powergeneration #environment #econmical #economics #technology #innovation #investing #sustainability #creativity

What have the closures of the last blast furnace at Port Talbot and the final British coal-fired power station at Ratcliffe-on-Soar got to do with one other? The common factor is coal. But the switch to Gas is not without its consequences. Coal, like it or not, is still a cheaper form of power than gas - at least before you take into account carbon costs. And unlike gas, coal supplies are not as dependent on Russia. And since electric arc furnaces are powered by electricity (as the name suggests), our ability to make steel at a reasonable price will be determined in future by those industrial power costs. #sustainability #ukeconomy #industry https://lnkd.in/eX9dxtwc

This morning at DLL Solutions we ran across this article and we are keenly interested in the advancements discussed in the article regarding the potential to double U.S. grid capacity using advanced reconductoring techniques. This method, which involves replacing older power lines with cables made from innovative materials, could dramatically enhance grid efficiency and capacity without the extensive regulatory approval required for new infrastructure. It represents a significant step forward in meeting the growing demand for electricity, particularly from renewable sources, and in improving system resilience against natural disasters like wildfires. How do you see this technique impacting the viability of the grid? ‘The future of long duration energy storage’ report by the Clean Energy Council explores alternative long duration #energy storage technology families, including redox flow batteries, that can complement and strengthen existing technologies to address the missing middle that lies between the short and seasonal energy storage spectrum. #Vanadium redox flow batteries (#VRFBs) were developed in Australia. The chemistry and range of capability of this technology type makes it a unique fit to meet Australian power system needs. Viking Mines is rapidly advancing its Canegrass Battery Minerals Project which contains a large JORC (2012) Global Inferred Mineral Resource Estimate of 146Mt at 0.70% V2O5, 31.8% Fe & 6.6% TiO2 (>0.5% V2O5 cut-off). If we stand any chance of transitioning our energy generation from dirty to clean, we’re going to need dirt… lots and lots and LOTS of it! I saw this interestingly scary chart overnight that approximates the amount of various minerals* required to establish a single megawatt of generation capacity. (*Minerals excluding steel and aluminium) Given we know where we need to get to, I guess we better start digging! https://lnkd.in/g8SSDPyG #FoodForThought #ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmmmm #VontobelEnergyRevolution
