"Dammit Jim, I’m a doctor, not a Business Analyst!" Disclaimer: I was a huge Star Trek fan growing up 🖖 What made it stand out for me was how it portrayed a future where humanity had overcome challenges and thrived—future was something to look forward to—instead of the inevitable enslavement of our new cyborg overlords 🤖 Which, if they are reading this, I obviously welcome. I've spent a big part of my career in both pharma and MedTech, selling both products and services, often with smooth sales pitches and value propositions supported by well-rehearsed sales techniques. My slides looked fancy and polished 💎 Shocker. It doesn’t always work. Perhaps not even that often. Maybe the many disappointments along the way have really made re-think the fundamentals of my approach and my messaging. One of my absolute favourite quotes in this space is from Don Peppers: “Customer will create most value for you, at the point, he thinks you’re creating most value for him.". So, do I know what is of *most value* to my customers? 🤔 Do I know their strategy and objectives and the metrics *they* are measured on? As the “customer” can be both an individual and an organisation – do I know this for all the relevant stakeholders? It’s not easy. In fact, every time it has felt easy, I’ve learned I’m probably doing it wrong. I’m also painfully discovering just how big the difference is between *assuming* and *knowing* 🙄 I’m slowly learning to focus on customer metrics and not just on my own. The more I do, the more I feel we’re talking the same language 💬 When this is done right, I’ve noticed that I’m not just delivering a sales pitch anymore but I’m becoming a potential partner—enabling the progress of customers own goals.

Hello LinkedIn, it’s been a while! Recently, I transitioned from being a Sales Rep to a Customer Intelligence Analyst, and after spending three months in the new role, here’s what I’ve learned: Perspective is Everything As a Sales Rep, I was trained to view a company in terms of its needs, pain points, budget, and decision-making process. The goal was clear: identify how our product or service could solve their immediate challenges. Now, as a Customer and Market Intelligence Analyst, the lens shifts. It’s not just about selling; it’s about learning—digging into demographics, industry trends, market strategies, NPS, and market share. It’s more about understanding the full picture of a potential client. From Analysis to Impact In sales, my focus was on evaluating the customer’s challenges, identifying their budget and timeline, and crafting a pitch that showed how we could outperform the competition. In my current role, the approach is broader. The objective isn’t just to spot problems but also to analyze what’s working for the company and how those successes can be enhanced. The result is a strategic roadmap designed to help the client reach their full potential, not just to solve immediate issues. Energy: Subtle vs. Active As a Sales Rep, the energy was always high—proactive and focused on building that perfect impression to land a deal. You’re constantly on your toes, connecting with decision-makers, and responding quickly. In Customer Intelligence, the energy is more behind the scenes—spent on analyzing reports, reading industry insights, and watching trends. It’s quieter, but the impact is just as crucial. While the goal of both roles is to land the deal, the mindset and approach are vastly different. It's been a fascinating journey from pitching solutions to understanding the customer, and I’m excited for what’s to come. 🚀 #Sales #CustomerIntelligence #CareerGrowth #B2B #MarketAnalysis #SalesStrategy #CustomerExperience #BusinessInsights

What makes a rep successful? Drove a data science project on this. We had expensive reps failing and new comers crushing it. What gave? Months, a quarters worth of effort by a team of data scientists. We looked at seemingly every angle. The single biggest predictor of rep success… Pipeline How much pipeline they started with? Even in multi factor, it was THE Factor. That is it, we stopped hiring for empty territories, warmed them up with development, covered by holdover, and hired once pipeline supported it. The expensive reps were more productive now, the ROI was there. The result for B2B upmarket, years of data, multiple products and markets. Simple solutions to big problems. #b2b #enterprise #sales #gotomarket #salesproductivity #pipeline #datascience
