𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 As budding professionals or undergraduates of higher institutions, we often focus on the obvious benefits of education: gaining knowledge, acquiring skills, and pursuing career goals. But let's delve deeper into the latent functions that shape our experiences beyond the classroom. Some students often focus purposely on the manifest function of education to achieve higher grades. Here is the synopsis of each of the concepts and I hope you benefit from it. 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Intended Purpose: Education equips us with knowledge and skills relevant to our fields, driving our career aspirations. Conscious Goals: We articulate our ambitions, leveraging education to drive strategic initiatives and promote growth. 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Unintended Consequences: Education extends beyond textbooks, offering practical skills and fostering leadership through extracurricular activities. Hidden Purposes Observed by Sociologists: Engaging in workshops, research, and community initiatives enriches our experiences, shaping us into well-rounded professionals. 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞: Reflecting on my journey, my education in Sociology provided not only academic knowledge but also practical skills in ethnography, stakeholder engagement, and leadership. Serving as President of a student association and a Public Relations Officer enhanced my communication and community engagement skills, complementing formal education. Let's recognize the multifaceted nature of education, embracing both its manifest and latent functions as we navigate our professional paths. #Education #CareerDevelopment #ProfessionalGrowth #GlobalSociology

Throwback to the day I realized teaching isn’t just a profession—it’s a way to shape the future. 🌟 #ThrowbackThursday Back in 2018, when I first started teaching at Mom's Pride Kids School, I walked into the classroom nervous but excited. I still remember the smiling faces of my students, eager to learn and explore. That first day taught me an important lesson: Teaching is about more than textbooks—it’s about building confidence, curiosity, and dreams. Fast forward to today, with over 5 years of experience and pursuing my M.A. in Sociology, I still feel the same excitement every time I see a student’s eyes light up with understanding. This journey has been about learning, adapting, and growing together with my students. And the best part? The endless moments of joy and inspiration they give me. What’s one moment from your professional journey that still inspires you? Let’s celebrate our milestones together—share your story in the comments! #ThrowbackThursday #TeachingJourney #EducationMatters #InspiringMinds #LifelongLearning #ChildDevelopment #TeacherMotivation #ClassroomStories

Have you ever seen life events come to full circle right in front of you? As I'm in the process of looking for opportunities post-graduation, I needed a reminder of why I undertook this grounded doctoral work to begin with. Recently, I had the opportunity to watch one of my first students ever (Bianca Espinal) break both legs at The Angel Maker Musical. It was so cool watching her grow in her artistry. I’ve seen her sing at the Columbus Circle subway stop, and again for American Idol, but this added another dimension. The little seventh grader who I taught math to when I first became a teacher was still leading with her voice and her energy. Little did she know that, when I was in seventh grade, I had my first role as Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. My middle school Nativity Mission Center was an all-boys school and we partnered with the all-girls school Holy Child Middle School, which is housed in the same building (Cornelia Connelly Center) as the theatre my former student would be performing in. Through this doctoral journey, I've gained expertise in sociology, mixed-methods research, recruitment and retention of teachers of color, and so many others, but what's grounded me this whole time is the anchor I developed through 15 years of teaching students math in Inwood / Washington Heights, NYC. And with students like Bianca, I learned more from them than I could have ever taught. It’s always good when you get to see a little light in another human being hoping they too will shine. #education #teaching #doctoral #sociology #highered

Genuinely inclusive and equitable teaching involves translating moral principles into concrete pedagogical practices. The most daunting challenge often lies in devising the latter in ways that actually work for specific institutional contexts and student populations. #pedagogy #sociology #UCSD #studentsuccess #highereducation #teaching #univerityteaching #collegeteaching #inclusiveteaching #equitableteaching

Teaching isn’t just a profession—it’s a mission to inspire, nurture, and empower young minds. 🌟 I started my teaching journey in 2018 at Mom's Pride Kids School. Over the years, I’ve taught kids aged 4 to 15, and every day has been a learning experience for me too. I love creating fun and simple lessons that make learning interesting for students. Every child is different, and I believe in teaching them in a way that works best for them. Now, as I study Sociology for my Master’s, I’m learning how our society shapes education. This helps me understand my students better and create a more positive learning environment. One thing I’ve learned from teaching is this: Every child has a spark, and it’s our job as teachers to help them shine. If you’re a teacher, parent, or just someone who loves learning, tell me—what’s one lesson you’ve learned from children? Let’s share our stories! #TeachingJourney #LearningTogether #EducationForAll #InspiringMinds #LifeLessons #TeacherLife #ClassroomStories #ChildDevelopment #FutureOfEducation #EdTech #StudentSuccess #PassionForTeaching #TeacherMotivation #SociologyInEducation #EducationMatters #EmpoweringStudents #PositiveLearning #SchoolLife #InnovativeTeaching #LifelongLearning

A leap of faith. Last year, as I was doing my final year in Bachelor of Social Sciences majoring in Psychology and Sociology, I took a leap of faith and applied to become a student mentor for Psychology students doing their 1st and 2nd year at the University of the Free State. Truthfully speaking, I was nervous but excited as well for the journey that I was about to embark at that time. I had no experience in being a mentor and I did not know how to navigate the whole process of being someone's mentor. I learnt a lot from this project, not only about my mentees but about myself as well. I never knew that I was capable of actually being someone that a student could look up to. Maintaining effective communication with my mentee was never an issue because I possess good communication skills and I made sure to check up on her from time to time and schedule meet-ups so that I could hear how 2nd year Psychology has been to her. Mentoring requires patience and adaptability. Each student is unique and may have different learning styles, needs, and challenges. Being patient and flexible in my approach allowed me to cater to my mentee's requirements and I adapted my mentoring strategies accordingly. I enjoyed the journey quite a lot and I look forward to many more opportunities as this👏🏽. #mentorship #psychologystudentmentor #ufs #humanitiesfaculty #mentor #finalyear #graduate #volunteering #departmentofpsychology #psychology #noticeme
