Have you ever seen life events come to full circle right in front of you? As I'm in the process of looking for opportunities post-graduation, I needed a reminder of why I undertook this grounded doctoral work to begin with. Recently, I had the opportunity to watch one of my first students ever (Bianca Espinal) break both legs at The Angel Maker Musical. It was so cool watching her grow in her artistry. I’ve seen her sing at the Columbus Circle subway stop, and again for American Idol, but this added another dimension. The little seventh grader who I taught math to when I first became a teacher was still leading with her voice and her energy. Little did she know that, when I was in seventh grade, I had my first role as Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. My middle school Nativity Mission Center was an all-boys school and we partnered with the all-girls school Holy Child Middle School, which is housed in the same building (Cornelia Connelly Center) as the theatre my former student would be performing in. Through this doctoral journey, I've gained expertise in sociology, mixed-methods research, recruitment and retention of teachers of color, and so many others, but what's grounded me this whole time is the anchor I developed through 15 years of teaching students math in Inwood / Washington Heights, NYC. And with students like Bianca, I learned more from them than I could have ever taught. It’s always good when you get to see a little light in another human being hoping they too will shine. #education #teaching #doctoral #sociology #highered

How did teaching middle school prepare me for social science research? I'm glad you asked! In my latest, I discuss a bit more about my research and how teaching teens math helped me understand my work as a sociologist over the last few years. Of course, if you got the newsletter, you already have this, but I'm providing the link here for the uninitiated :-). Subscribe and let me know what you think. Education is the key to unlocking a child’s true potential, and every teacher holds that key. 🔑✨ When I started teaching in 2018 at Mom's Pride Kids School, I never imagined how much I would learn from my students. Over the years, I’ve discovered that teaching is not just about lessons; it’s about connection, patience, and understanding each child’s unique spark. Now, as I pursue my Master’s in Sociology, I’m diving deeper into how society shapes education. This helps me design better learning experiences for my students, making their journeys more meaningful. One lesson I hold close is: Every child can achieve greatness—they just need the right guidance and support. To my fellow educators and parents: What’s one thing you’ve learned from children that inspires you? I’d love to hear your stories and experiences. Let’s start a conversation—comment below or DM me to connect and share ideas! #TeachingJourney #EducationForAll #InspiringMinds #LifeLessons #TeacherMotivation #LearningTogether #ChildDevelopment #ClassroomStories #PositiveLearning #LifelongLearning #SociologyInEducation #PassionForTeaching

🌟 Exploring Education: Philosophical and Sociological Insights 📚 Education goes beyond classrooms and textbooks—it's a journey shaped by philosophers and sociologists. Let's dive into the simple yet profound perspectives that define education. Education is about knowledge and growth, echoing the thoughts of ancient and modern thinkers. From Plato to Dewey, philosophers ask: Why do we learn? How do we shape wise minds? Their ideas guide educators today. Different philosophies offer diverse views. Idealism values ideas and truth, while pragmatism focuses on practical learning. Existentialism encourages finding meaning in a confusing world. But education isn't just about ideas—it's tied to society. Sociological views help us understand this link. Functionalism says education keeps society together by passing on culture. Conflict theory sees education as reinforcing inequality. Symbolic interactionism looks at how students and teachers interact, shaping the learning experience. Understanding these perspectives helps us improve education for everyone. At our level, let's keep exploring how philosophy and sociology can guide us to a fairer, more empowering education system. #Education #Philosophy #Sociology #Learning #Equality #LinkedInLearning

🌟 Mentoring A-Level Students: A Journey of Shared Growth and Inspiration 🌟 I recently had the privilege of mentoring A-Level students from Clapton Girls Academy as part of the Quintin Hogg Trust-funded mentoring project at the University of Westminster. This experience was nothing short of incredible! It was a joy to share my insights with young girls navigating their academic journeys, offering guidance on progression through education and the transition to university life. Seeing their enthusiasm and ambition was genuinely inspiring. However, what stood out the most was how much I learned from them. This experience reinforced a lesson close to my heart: knowledge and wisdom are not confined by age. When we open ourselves to dialogue and meaningful conversations, we create a space where learning becomes mutual and transformative. I’m so grateful to have been part of this initiative at the University of Westminster alongside my peers and course lecturers, Dr Naomi Rudoe and Dr Ben Pitcher, who are equally committed to empowering the next generation. This project highlights the importance of collaboration in building a more equitable and sustainable future through quality education. To learn more about this inspiring project, check out the University of Westminster's recent article: https://lnkd.in/edcY_UVB . Here to creating opportunities for dialogue, mentorship, and shared growth! 💡✨ #Mentorship #EducationForAll #UniversityOfWestminster #WeAreWestminster #Sociology #SustainableDevelopmentGoals

How nice. The first chapter of my PhD was published in 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ 𝑖𝑛 𝑆𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑀𝑜𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦. In this study, toghether with my great supervisor Pieter-Paul Verhaeghe, we explore how social origins and social selection in higher education have evolved in Belgium from the post-WWII era to the early 2000s. Unlike previous studies, we uncovered a fascinating pattern: while social inequalities in tertiary educational attainment declined for those born before 1975, we see a resurgence for later generations. This "U-turn" in educational selection becomes visible only when measuring social origins through a multidimensional lens, combining parental education with social class. By analyzing data from over 13,800 individuals, we reveal distinct patterns in how families' educational and class resources interact to shape educational outcomes. Our findings highlight the critical importance of considering both class and education in understanding social inequalities—especially for people born after 1975. 📄 Check out the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ePDWUFcR #SocialMobility #EducationalInequality #HigherEducation #Research #Belgium #Sociology #InequalityStudies #EducationalResearch

My toddler arranged our shoes in the picture and just walked off like, “Yup, that makes sense.” Reflection: I taught a series of lessons to my elementary students (Grades 2-5) that were based in the social sciences. We talked about some of the thinking behind concepts that many would deem “high level” conversational topics in Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology, etc. In one particular lesson, I gave the students a random set of items and told them to “make it make sense” then walked away. This eventually turned into an introduction and discourse around the idea of making order out of chaos. It’s interesting to see what children are capable of, especially now being a father. #children #parenting #teacher #education

🌍 I had the pleasure of participating in the **XV Congreso Español de Sociología** in Seville, from June 26 to 29, 2024, under the theme #SociologíaParaLaSociedadDigital.Together with Natália Alves , I presented the paper "Desigualdades Sociales y Educativas en las Narrativas de Jóvenes con Experiencia de Abandono Temprano de la Educación y la Formación". We reflected on the preliminary results of the data collected as part of the CLEAR Project HORIZON Europe and my PhD thesis. It was a great opportunity to share and discuss our initial findings on social mobility and the social inequalities faced by young adults today with the academic community.#XVcongresoFES #Sociology #Education #SocialInequalities #CLEARProject
