Reflecting on a Powerful Gathering! Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) event, surrounded by an incredible group of powerful women and aligned men, all advocating for gender equality. The discussions centered on vital topics like gender-based training, unconscious bias, and the importance of encouraging more women to take on investment roles. We delved into how we can be more accountable in investing in women, from asking the right questions to fostering open conversations within corporate cultures. It's not just about setting quotas; it's about taking tangible actions to drive real change. We explored the cultural, political, and psychological barriers that hinder gender diversity and discussed the crucial role of male allyship in advancing gender equality. Open communication with men, especially those in leadership roles, is one of the keys to driving meaningful progress. We also tackled the nuances of quotas and tokenism, acknowledging the complexities while striving for genuine representation and inclusivity. It was inspiring to see such a diverse group come together with a shared vision for a more equitable future. I specifically spoke about the role female capital allocators play in driving gender equality due to the natural trickle down effects to female led and founded businesses. I left the event feeling optimistic, knowing that positive actions will follow all the insightful discussions shared. Let's continue to push boundaries, challenge norms, and advocate for change. Together, we can create a world where every woman has the opportunity to thrive. #nbcc #iwd #investinwomen #iwd2024 #aruwacapital #genderlensinvesting

🙋🏽♀️Addressing the gender gap in leadership. Despite women now occupying a historic high of 28% of C-suite positions, according to a recent study from McKinsey & Company, the gender leadership gap still persists, particularly for women of colour. 🙋🏾♀️The journey toward gender equality in leadership is far from complete & the importance of women in leadership cannot be overstated. 🙋🏼♀️Women play a crucial role in cultivating inclusive workplaces, challenging biases, and serving as role models for future female leaders. Yet, entrenched gender stereotypes still hold women back, unfairly penalising them for demonstrating the same leadership qualities as men. 🙋🏻♀️At the current rate of change, it will take 132 years to close the global gender gap, according to the World Economic Forum 🤯 .This is unacceptable. 🙋🏿♀️Let’s step up our efforts to break down systemic barriers and ensure equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender. 🚺 Read more in this article from Forbes: https://lnkd.in/ewkAzAyU & below ⬇️ #femaleleadership #gendergap #equality

As we reflect on the journey towards gender equality, let's take a moment to honor a groundbreaking moment in history: the ascent of Sirimavo Bandaranaike as the world's first female head of state. In 1960, Sirimavo shattered barriers and paved the way for women in leadership when she was elected Prime Minister of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Her remarkable achievement was not just a personal triumph but a victory for gender equality worldwide. Sirimavo's leadership exemplified resilience, courage, and a commitment to breaking down the walls of patriarchy. At a time when societal norms dictated that women should stay behind the scenes, Sirimavo stood tall, challenging the status quo and proving that gender is not a barrier to leadership. Through her visionary policies and unwavering dedication, she transformed her nation and inspired generations of women to dream big and aim high. Sirimavo's journey serves as a poignant reminder that progress towards gender equality is not linear but the result of tireless advocacy and bold action. Her legacy continues to inspire us to push boundaries, defy expectations, and create a world where every individual, regardless of gender, has the opportunity to thrive and lead. As we celebrate Sirimavo Bandaranaike's historic milestone, let's reaffirm our commitment to advancing gender equality in all spheres of life. Together, let's build a future where every woman can rise to her fullest potential and contribute her unique talents to shaping a more inclusive and equitable world. #NIQSFoundation #ThrowbackThursday #GenderEquality #SirimavoBandaranaike #Leadership #Empowerment #EqualityForAll

Seasoned observers note that most social and political change takes years, yet when it occurs, it seemingly happens overnight. The complex nature of gender inequality means that solutions generally demand high levels of collaboration and collective commitment over time, says Brianna Losoya-Evora, Head of Impact Measurement and Management at Sweef Capital. Progress can seem frustratingly slow. In Latin America there is a significant focus on vulnerable communities, including women, yet the region also offers significant untapped investment opportunities in women-led businesses, says Amplifica Capital Founder and CEO Anna Raptis. The region faces many problems, but problems that can be fixed through innovative approaches that deliver multiple benefits, adds Amplifica’s Head of Impact and ESG, Andrea Ojeda Valle. When it comes to gender equality, transformation can seem a pipe dream, with the World Economic Forum warning the overall gender gap will take 131 years to close at the current rate of progress. Gendered social norms are still deeply ingrained and perpetuate harmful behaviours and barriers to women and girls realising their full potential, says Brianna Losoya-Evora, Head of Impact Measurement and Management at Sweef Capital. On the ground the picture is more nuanced, with pioneering firms like Amplifica Capital identifying new investment opportunities in technology-based companies across Spanish-speaking Latin America that are founded by women or offer goods or services that improve women’s lives. Founder Anna Raptis says Amplifica’s mission is to show women as creators of value, of wealth, rather than as beneficiaries. How do we achieve gender equality in the media? Stocktaking since 1995 by WACC’s Global Media Monitoring Project (#GMMP) shows that progress remains slow, painfully so. And this on the eve of the 30th anniversary of UN Women's Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. What is needed is a comprehensive, systems approach – a whole-of-society approach as outlined in the report “Breaking Barriers”, published by Fojo Media Institute and the Center for International Media Assistance and co-authored by GMMP Global Coordinator Sarah Macharia together with Agneta Söderberg Jacobson and Malak Monir. Breaking Barriers maps out intervention pathways in three interconnected areas: 🔹 media regulation 🔹 ownership, management, and leadership 🔹 market dynamics and at three intersecting levels: 🔹 micro 🔹 mesa 🔹 macro The report’s launch event featured a thought-provoking discussion about what a broader enabling environment for gender-equal media might look like: 🚺 Laura Aguirre (Alharaca, SembraMedia) on advancing gender-equal media in authoritarian contexts 🚺 Dr Yemisi Akinbobola (African Women in Media) on the Kigali Declaration as a successful whole-of-society model 🚺 Martin Schori (Aftonbladet) on using AI to further gender equality in media 🚺 Luba Kassova (AKAS) on the business case for equitable news and on addressing backlash to gender equality Discover more: https://lnkd.in/gxvnCVBT #GenderEqualMedia #GenderEquality #GenderAndMedia #MediaDevelopment #Beijing30
