【Temasek’s Bold $10 Billion Investment in India 🇮🇳】 -- A Strategic Move Amid China Slowdown In a move that underscores India’s growing significance on the global investment landscape, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, Temasek Holdings, has announced plans to invest $10 billion in India over the next three years. 🇨🇳 This ambitious investment comes at a time when the performance of #Chinese markets has been lackluster, underscoring #India’s importance as one of Temasek’s top two preferred markets globally, alongside the #US. 🇸🇬 Looking at Temasek's #trackrecord, it's impressive to note that they have already deployed around $37 billion in India over the past two decades.. 💡As of 2023, India now makes up 7% of Temasek’s global portfolio by underlying assets, up from 4% in 2020. In 2023 alone, they invested a record $3 billion in the country. What stands out to me is their perspective on India's market dynamics: "India has always commanded a premium due to its growth potential. By identifying and investing in the right businesses, consistently achieved returns that justify the higher valuations" "The capital markets and deal sizes in India have been steadily increasing, thanks to the expanding and maturing financial markets. The current high valuations are justified by the potential for above-average returns," Temasek’s #InvestmentStrategy in India will focus on several key areas, including technology, financial services, healthcare, and consumer goods. 🌡️ For instance, Temasek’s portfolio, Sheares Healthcare Group, healthcare investor, recently invested almost $2 billion in Manipal Health Enterprises Pvt. Ltd, Indian leading muli speciality hospital operator, with total stake of 59% (new 41%) at $4.9 billion valuation. This valuation is justified by Manipal’s strong financial performance, including 1) a revenue of around $488 million, 2) an EBITDA margin of 24% for FY 2023, 3) several millions patient as sticky customers and 4) potential for free cash flow generation. Later, they sold 8% stake to Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund, Mubadala while holding majority shares. Very successful story and foreseen investment. I reckon their increasing investment in India reaffirms the country's status as a pivotal destination for global investors. As someone keenly observing these developments, it's clear that India's market offers tremendous opportunities, and Temasek’s commitment only strengthens this outlook. Setting up right and strong foundations when creating a company, is a must; more important than ever before. A company needs to have a PURPOSE and VISION. These have to be set as clear as possible by the founder(s) since its inception. Then VALUES. These will trickle down and used as the guidelines for everyone in the company to think and act. These are the backbones that will set the culture of the company. Founder/CEO cant just rely on those written and framed on the office wall. Purpose, Vision, and Values should not be something the team have to memorize. Rather, something they need to do. So, as the Founder/CEO, what you need to do is to LEAD BY EXAMPLE by always WALK THE TALK. As a VC, i would love to back this kind of company and founder. I had an interesting chat with Yuke Xie from the South China Morning Post SCMP recently on the evolving investment strategies of Middle Eastern institutions and family offices.    Traditionally centered on the US and Europe, these investors and institutions are now turning their attention to the dynamic economies of #SoutheastAsia.    Looking forward, I foresee Southeast Asia maturing significantly as an investment hub, driven by its vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem and fast-growing middle class. The success of a Fund boils down to DPI (distributions back to LPs in relation to how much capital was deployed). The industry often gets infatuated with TVPI, which accounts for paper gains. However, these numbers are frequently not worth the paper they are printed on. Knowing when to stick or twist is always a challenge, so I favor a balanced approach: the third-third-third strategy. Sell a third of the investment at the first opportunity. Gradually sell the second third. Hold onto the final third for potential upside. Even this model needs adjustments based on market conditions, requiring a mix of aggressive selling or patience. The real issue for LPs is the industry's recent obsession with maximizing TVPI without enough attention to DPI. For Southeast Asia’s tech ecosystem to be self-sustaining, we need some big changes. There are a few key elements I believe can unlock tremendous opportunity in the region. To name a few: ✅ Deep, varied capital stack - Sufficient capital at various stages from angels to growth capital. ✅ Diverse investors - Knowledgeable investors focusing on various industries and models. ✅ Exits infrastructure - Mechanisms for exits from IPOs to M&A. ✅ Strong founders - Awareness of the nuances of SEA and conviction to depart from “tried and tested” models adapted from matured markets like the US With these in place, it will accelerate interest and success for investors and founders alike. That said, I believe our core approach needs to change. Over the last decade, SEAsia has greatly matured. And with any nascent upstart, it’s applied what’s worked elsewhere... Focusing heavily on growth-at-all-cost and other US-inspired strategies. To the surprise of most, the results have not been the most encouraging as a result of this. On hindsight, the pitfalls were clear: - Unrealistic early-stage valuations. - Chasing very large outcomes in a fragmented market. - Applying US playbooks that don't fit our market. Startups will follow suit to match criteria that VCs set. It’s how the game works. With the current market downturn, it’s a good opportunity to reset and intentionally chart our own course for the region. Investors and founders that know how to meander this market with it’s unique strengths / market dynamics in mind, will succeed. As investors and long-time believers in this region ourselves at Tin Men Capital , We believe in working together to develop the ecosystem. Southeast Asia is still learning to walk before it begins to run. Venture capital is a team sport, and together, we can build a stronger, self-sustaining space for startups to thrive. Japan’s oldest VC firm Jafco Group Co. is expecting a 200% return for its SV7 fund as several portfolio startups have expanded operations in foreign nations. The firm expects the fund’s value to cross the paid-in capital by 2.5 times. The early-stage VC firm also plans to launch a new $640M fund next year. Portfolio startup Astroscale Holdings is expected to cement its unicorn status and cross the $1B valuation mark soon. Jafco has backed 4,100 startups to date and has about $2.9B (466B yen) worth of assets under management. By Oct. 2023, Japan had only seven unicorn startups, per the Japan Venture Capital Association. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has introduced several reforms with the aim to create about 100 unicorn startups by 2027.

Greatly honoured to have been invited to the Integrating Real World Tech event hosted by STABILITY at the Embassy of the United States in Singapore yesterday. We heard perspectives from Sin Yong Loh, Thorsten Neumann (龚拓思), Stacey-Ann Pearson, Pranav Mehrotra and Steffen Schacher on their and their organisations perspectives, as well of course from Klay Nichol and Juliun Brabon of STABILITY. Consensus seems to be that outside of banking where the use case is obvious, the needle is moving but slowly. Within the realm in which TNETS Global operates, i.e. that of customs and trade, where trust is paramount and risk is high, there is still a tendency to stick with what has always worked. We used to say "No-one ever got fired for choosing IBM". We probably need to update that to "No-one ever got fired for sending unencrytped pdfs attached to email." Panellists generally agreed there is a long way to go to remove exchanges of non-structured data and head towards touchless straight-through processing. The needle is moving as STABILITY are demonstrating but more patience is required with supply chain partners who sense more risk than reward in adopting some of the frictionless technologies that are proving to be stable in other fields. (The Embassy is very strict on no photo-taking so enlisted the help of AI to capture the scene perfectly!)
