On the 1st anniversary of the attack on the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), I was privileged to present my research titled "Lost in Translation: Linguistic Barriers to Nagorno-Karabakh's Lasting Ceasefire" at the UCLA Summer Research Incubator Symposium. During this 7-week program, I had the opportunity to complete an original research project relating to the issues of diversity or social justice in the humanities, arts, or social sciences at UCLA, during which I explored the intersection of language and geopolitics in the case of the South Caucasus. Specifically, this paper investigates how discrepancies between state and independent translations of the 2023 Nagorno-Karabakh ceasefire declaration challenge a universally understood and thus accepted agreement. In future iterations, I plan to expand on the role of semantics and regional relations on the inequitable implementation of peace and would welcome any additional feedback. I would also like to express my gratitude to Dr. Jacquelyn Ardam, Jason Araújo, S.T., H.T., Medora Asilyan, and Lilit Harutyunyan for their support throughout my project. Credit to this summer program, I have more formally developed my understanding of both the research process and academia. The initial research paper can be read here: https://lnkd.in/gbqaxt9G

Many thanks to the Académie des Sciences, la Fondation Simone et Cino Del Duca, Caroline Rossi and Justine Fabre for having invited me to speak at the excellent seminar about “Pourquoi Helsinki ? Les outils pour la promotion d’une science accessible, ouverte et multilingue » (Why Helsinki : Tools for promoting an accessible, open and multilingual science) in Paris on October 3rd 2024. My aim was to demonstrate that to obtain open science, open access and multilingualism, the ring that binds them is an appropriate, balanced and thought out system of evaluation that takes into account SDG as our audience is not simply our peers. There is a great danger in simply adopting what seem like ‘good’ policy without considering all the aspects. Open access can be seen to have reinforced the place of commercial publishers with an emphasis on open access at a price, which thereby excludes many researchers and imposes English as the ‘natural’ language of science. Open sciences can also mean that commercial interests simply appropriate our work so as to sell it back to us or use it to other commercial ends. The mass of data is in English, and so will be the output. Evaluation based on commercial databases is also highly oriented to English. Thus, the key to multilingualism, the promotion of all languages, whilst not refuting the role of one, can only be promoted by adapted evaluation policy and the recognition that our disciplinary peers are not the only audience and that societal impact requires translation. #academiedessciences #fondationdelduca #sciences #Académie #multilingualism #evaluation #openaccess #openscience #sdg #coara #HelsinkiInitiative #enressh #dglflf Caroline Rossi Justine Ancelin-Fabre Fondation Simone et Cino Del Duca - Institut de France Emmanuelle Pensec, PhD Abdelghani Maddi Olivier SIRE, Emanuel Kulczycki Jon Holm Natalie Kübler Ioana Galleron Souleymane Bachir Diagne Rémi Quirion Fatiha IDMHAND Janne Pölönen Jack Spaapen Michael Ochsner Lise Fontaine André Brasil Ismael Rafols Thed van Leeuwen Éric André Poirier Robert Lew Lynne Murphy Andrea Bonaccorsi Lysiane Métayer Paul de SINETY Claire Giry Etienne Ghys

I had a fantastic time addressing the faculty and PhD students at the Faculty Development Programme on "Envisioning the Future: Multidisciplinary Approaches in Research on Languages and Literatures" at the Department of English and Foreign Languages, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) on the 'Methods and Research in Film Studies'. In my talk, I discussed the importance of film language in research and the field's evolution from textual analysis to a wide array of research approaches and methods used in contemporary film scholarship. #FilmStudies #FDP #Research #Academia
