The podcasting landscape has shifted dramatically, with YouTube surpassing Apple Podcasts as the leading platform. Even the best can lose their market share if they dont focus on it as a core business: - YouTube now dominates, accounting for 31% of U.S. podcast listening, driven by its superior discovery tools and video integration. - Apple's focus on audio-only content and lack of monetization tools has led to a decline in market share. - Video podcasts, supported by platforms like YouTube and TikTok, are becoming the new norm, transforming how users engage with content. #Podcasting #YouTubePodcasts #ApplePodcasts #DigitalMedia #ContentCreation #TechTrends #VideoPodcasts #CreatorEconomy https://lnkd.in/d_jQ3D8e

What do you think about Spotify rolling out video podcasts beyond just those hosted with them? And, what do you think about some of the details of how it's being done (ie not via RSS feed, stats therefore not within your standard hosting stats, but also not using RSS feed at all from there, even if you have audio only eps)? It's something I'm monitoring closely, curious to see how much impact it will really have. YouTube still feels like the video spot, and given the complexities above, I'd be curious of the value comparatively. Over time, though, I'm sure this will evolve. Lots of moving parts in podcasting right now with video. P.S. Don't just jump on the "we must have full on camera video" bandwagon, without understanding all this a lot more. What to do with video, YouTube, etc. depends on your audience, goals, bandwidth, budget and more. Audio is still where deep engagement happens, and should not be overlooked for the sake of a pretty (or not so) video (especially if you're targeting a busy, professional audience, like most people I speak to). https://lnkd.in/dGNsAs5j

Earlier today, I had a great conversation with Marshall Williams, Partner & Chairman of Ad Results Media and one of the sharpest voices in the audio space when it comes to monetization. The topic? Video. Specifically, Spotify’s latest push into video podcasts and what it means for the industry. If you’re still denying that video is part of podcasting, this post probably isn’t for you. Video, along with Audio, is the future of podcasting. But here's the problem: the expansion into video is riddled with issues that need real solutions. And those solutions shouldn’t just come from individual platforms—they need to come from the podcast industry as a whole. In my latest, I dive into Spotify’s video strategy, where it hits and misses, and what the industry needs to do to create tools that allow audio and video to thrive together. This reminds me of the consumer learning assessment I completed at QUT! In that assessment, I recommended the addition of a comment feature for Spotify's future marketing initiatives. To my surprise, they are now launching this feature! It’s exciting to see that my suggestions align with their current direction! Word-of-mouth has a profound impact on consumer decision-making, which has prompted many e-commerce platforms to introduce features designed to generate online word-of-mouth. Research indicates that user-generated content is often more influential than corporate advertisements. Furthermore, studies reveal that negative comments tend to carry more weight than positive feedback, significantly shaping consumer perceptions and choices.
Everybody loves podcasts, but they’ve historically been a one-sided format. That changes today on Spotify. We’re rolling out Comments, a new way for creators and fans to connect directly.

Obsessing over the new Spotify for Podcasters trend report. My key takeaway: More Podcasts! "Gen Z is tuning in to more podcasts than they did in 2023 while older generations (aged 45+) are streaming more minutes of podcasts." - Spotify Advertising report—the 2024 Podcast Trends Tour. If Podcasts are not yet within your advertising mix, it definitely should be before the end of the year. Check out the trend report here: https://lnkd.in/emW-kFBd

🚀 Spotify Adds Comments to Podcasts – Game-Changer or Just Noise? 🎙️ Spotify is stepping up its game by adding comments to podcasts! But will this feature be a revolutionary way to engage with content or just another closed-loop system? 🤔📱 ✨ Pros: Potential for fostering community and feedback Helps creators connect with their audience ⚠️ Cons: Closed platform limits discussions to Spotify only Risk of toxicity and spam without proper moderation I weigh in with my thoughts along with Mary Chan and Sam Tarantino on whether this will boost podcasting or trap listeners in Spotify’s ecosystem. How does podcasting now and possibly in the future compare to YouTube? I like to think that I was one of the first people listening to podcasts amongst my peers. When I was a freshman in college, starting in my spring semester, I had 3 classes in a row--11 AM, 12 PM, and 1 PM. I worked from 9 AM to 11 AM. I bring this up because after my 1 PM class, I would walk a short distance to get lunch in the cafeteria. At that time, the cafeteria would close at 2, so I would have to get in before that. All the cafeteria workers new me. They were great people. Anyways, I would be one of the few people there. I would get my food, sit down, and then use this Android phone that came with a kickstand and open up Stitcher. Through Stitcher, I would listen to my first podcasts. My very first one was the News Dissector with Danny Schechter. I bring this up because there was no advertising on there. There was no paywall. This sounds a lot like YouTube, even Facebook, back in the day. It was such a better experience without advertisers (or at least ones done through the podcast platform--there might have been some who would do their own personal ads for products/brands they liked) or algorithms. While I understand podcasting has become huge, I think what a lot of companies and investors have failed to realize is why they have become popular. Most people, fortunately or unfortunately, have turned away from mainstream media. A lot of people would have political reasons for this situation. However, I think that there is a deeper reason why. It is because people like longform storytelling, not just 10 second soundbites. While I am not a proponent of infotainment, I would hypothesize that years ago, journalistic media covered topics much more thoroughly and covered topics people collectively actually wanted to hear about, not because a certain demographic wanted to. How will corporate investment affect the podcasting industry? Well, I think we all have seen what it did to YouTube and Facebook.

🎧 Spotify’s Smart Move Towards Community-Building 💡 👬 In a world where YouTube reigns supreme, Spotify’s launch of podcast comments is a brilliant and strategic move. By enabling community-building and fan engagement similar to YouTube, Spotify is enhancing the listener experience and fostering a sense of community (plus, with many podcasts incorporating video components these days, the YouTube resemblance is striking). 🤝 This feature allows listeners to interact directly with podcast episodes, making them feel more connected and engaged. 🔢 The numbers speak for themselves: users who engage with these interactive features are 4x more likely to return to a show within 30 days and listen to 2x as many podcasts. This not only boosts listener retention but also increases overall podcast consumption. ⚡ Spotify’s commitment to innovation and user engagement is a smart strategy in today's competitive media landscape. Anything that looks, feels, and acts more like YouTube is bound to be a win for creators and listeners alike. https://lnkd.in/ehYAYr_z Witz About Her // #Spotify #Podcasting #CommunityBuilding #FanEngagement #DigitalMedia #Innovation
