I write in today's The Hindu on reforms needed to #municipalelections in India, against the background of the Supreme Court's judgement in the Chandigarh mayoral election case. There are 3 major issues that need to be resolved with respect to #municipalelections namely i) timely elections to councils ii) timely elections of mayors, deputy mayors and standing committees (incl in between council elections, where terms are < 5 yrs) and iii) voter turnout. Strengthening State Election Commissions would be necessary to accomplish these reforms. Frankly, #municipalelections matter far more directly to our lives in #cities than Lok Sabha or Vidhan Sabha elections. #citysystems #onoe Janaagraha V R Vachana Santosh Nargund Anand Iyer

How BJP rose to serve the people of Odisha In 2017, Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) emerged as the main opposition in the State, taking over from the Congress after the 2017 panchayat elections. Having been a significant political force from 2000 to 2008 while allied with the BJD in the State government, it took only a decade for BJP to establish itself independently. BJPs increasing influence was highlighted in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, where BJP secured 8 out of the 21 seats, a notable increase from the single seat won in 2014. This growth is attributed to the Narendra Modi wave and the electorate's distinct voting patterns for the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
