When earthquakes happen, they not only can change the landscape of the area where they occur, but the lives of the residents who occupy the land. 2024 has brought 14 earthquakes of a magnitude of 4 or higher to California, greater than the yearly state average of 8. With awareness in disaster preparedness from Tzu Chi USA and Listos California, community members can have safety skills if ever at risk for losing their homes and loved ones from such a natural disaster. By staying informed with an earthquake alert system, of proper earthquake drills, and on where safety shelters are located, one can lead in ways of disaster readiness, response, and recovery for an earthquake to benefit their households and neighborhood. For further information on earthquake preparedness, check the annual Great Shake Out event this October 17th and participate with millions of people worldwide. In these disasters, God is saying something quite different—something vitally important. He is warning the people that they have a responsibility, and if they fail to live under their covenant with Him, He has the power to correct them so that they will repent. In the Scriptures earthquakes are mentioned as tokens of God's power (Job 9:6) and of His presence and anger (Psalms 68:8; 18:7; Isaiah 13:13): "She shall be visited of Yahweh of hosts .... with earthquake, and great noise" (Isaiah 29:6); also as a sign of Christ's "coming, and of the end of the world" (Matthew 24:3-7) Luke 21:11 In-Context 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. 12 “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. Talk of peace and safety are a sign of the last days. It's in the Bible, I Thessalonians 5:2-3, NIV. “For you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, ‘Peace and safety,' destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.” The gospel will go to the whole world and the end will come. It's in the Bible, Matthew 24:14, NIV. “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” What are people to do when they see these things taking place? It's in the Bible, Matthew 24:42-44, TLB. “So be prepared, for you don't know what day your Lord is coming. Just as a man can prevent trouble from thieves by keeping watch for them, so you can avoid trouble by always being ready for My unannounced return.” It's in the Bible, Luke 21: 28, NKJV. “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” Jesus is coming again. It's in the Bible, John 14:2-3, NKJV. “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”

Hurricane #Milton is already a lesson in good emergency management. As storms increase in power and impact around the world, effective emergency management is becoming more crucial than ever. It’s not just about responding to disasters - it's about proactive planning, community resilience, and continuous improvement. 🔍 Why It Matters: 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: Training and simulations empower communities to respond swiftly. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲: Coordinated efforts save lives and mitigate damage during crises. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆: Strong recovery plans help communities bounce back faster and stronger. 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Implementing strategies reduces future risks and enhances safety. It is clear that Floridians understand the need to have excellent preparation (stored water and non-perishables; power supplies and fuel) and mitigation (removing hazards, and in one case, moving to a new home built with concrete blocks!). Having worked in Response and Recovery, I know there is always more we can do. 24th October is ShakeOut in New Zealand, our national earthquake drill.
