This is an oldie but a goodie. Did you know you likely ingest dozens of naturally occurring pesticides every single day, many of which are more toxic by dose than their synthetic counterparts? My personal favorite is in my morning cup(s) of coffee, which contains a hearty does of caffeine - a naturally occurring neurotoxin plants evolved to protect themselves from insect pests. A few things to remember - natural does not necessarily mean healthy, just like synthetic does not necessarily mean unhealthy. The dose makes the poison, which is why we need smart, science-based regulation to advise how we should limit our dietary risks - both the natural and synthetic ones. #pesticides #natural #synthetic #agriculture

One of the most prevalent mycotoxins found on coffee is Ochratoxin A, which studies show is toxic to your kidneys, brain, and immune system. The strategy of reducing crude protein (CP) content in swine diets while supplementing with amino acids (AAs) is not a novel concept; in fact, I recall learning about it during my university studies more than 30 years ago. However, in some regions, this approach remains underutilized, largely due to traditional practices or even legislation that favors higher CP levels. This review explores the implications of reducing CP content in swine diets on productivity, physiology, and environmental sustainability. The research highlights diverse effects depending on the production stage. In piglets, reduced CP levels can impair growth unless adequately balanced with essential AAs. Growing pigs generally adapt well to reduced CP diets with AA supplementation, while finishing pigs exhibit improved meat quality and reduced nitrogen excretion. In alternative systems, such as organic or Iberian pork production, the approach yields favorable outcomes, including lower environmental impacts and enhanced carcass traits. Physiological studies indicate that low-CP diets influence gene expression in muscles and intestines, affecting growth and overall health. Environmentally, these diets significantly reduce ammonia and methane emissions, though their impact on other pollutants, such as hydrogen sulfide, can vary. This strategy presents a promising avenue for sustainable swine production, with specific applications tailored to different production systems and stages.
