This week is #LonelinessAwarenessWeek. Campaign to End Loneliness reports recent research showing that disabled people in the UK are more likely to feel substantially lonely (25%), compared to adults with no disability (6%). Our Listening Service was first introduced at the beginning of the pandemic lockdown in March 2020 as our normal face-to-face and home visiting services had to be suspended - we wanted to give our clients reassurance that we were still there for them at the end of the phone to help if they needed it. We received very appreciative feedback from those we spoke to with quite a few commenting that we were the first agency to reach out to them. It struck us that this was a great way of keeping in touch with clients on our database so we can ascertain if they need our help again and, just as importantly, make them feel that someone out there cares. So we decided to keep it going and it is largely run today by our marvellous volunteers. What did we love about Kuttan or Manjummel Boys? They volunteered to rescue their friend (Subash), who fell into a cave, even when the trained professionals were doubtful. They may have volunteered even if it wasn't their friend. What happens when you volunteer to help those in need? You are seen as a light from God. Just like how Subash saw Kuttan, when Kuttan entered the cave to save him. Though Manjummel Boys talked more about true friendship, what we saw in it was the boys’ selflessness. What do you think of when you think of the word "community"? When I think of the word community I think of town, neighborhood, residents, a village. When a community begins to support each other great things happen. How can you support your community? * Shop Local- If we want our community to thrive, it starts with doing business with local business owners and less big box stores. * Volunteer- Volunteering in your community is a great way to show you care *Assist in Your Schools- Not everyone is going to have time for things like PTA, but reaching out and asking how you can help and what do they need goes a long way? *Visit the Elderly- There are many elderly in senior care centers who don't have family that visit. Create cards, or take some care packages.
