It’s when you take the time to dive deep into the client’s specific challenges and align them directly with the solution you’re offering. Instead of a generic product walkthrough, you’re showcasing how this feature solves their problem. The best part? That moment when the client is left thinking, “Wow, I need this functionality!” It’s not just about the features; it’s about making the product feel like it was designed for them.

Oh man, I'm guilty—a lot. In a recent conversation with a Sales Engineer, we discussed the trend of using the wealth of information about our craft to push back on AEs. Pushing back on the AE might be the right move from a time management and deal probability perspective. But what about the team spirit? The annoyance. The friction. Sales is chaos. A process tries to make a deal predictable, but the human factor still has the greatest impact. A too-stringent process robs us of options. Having options is crucial to creating an antifragile sales team. And Everyone who worked as AE or SDR would typically agree that prospects enter the deal cycle with different expectations. Sometimes, the right thing to do is jump on a last-minute call, run the standard demo, and go from there. Prospects expect us to work for them rather than for our process. For example, an acquaintance was eager to purchase a video automation tool, ready to swipe his credit card. However, he was first directed to watch a series of automated demos, then had to wait for an SDR, and finally, after a few days of delay, got to speak with an AE. The result: frustration from a rigid sales process that doesn't prioritize the customer's time and needs. As a boxer aims behind the head to hit the nose, Sales Engineers should focus on more than just the technical win. How open are you to off-process requests from your AEs?
