Portland General Electric (PGE) joins effort to develop and construct $3.2 billion, 415-mile HVDC interconnector project! Earlier today, Portland General Electric signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Grid United and ALLETE, Inc. in the development of the North Plains Connector, an approximately 415-mile high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission line to be constructed with endpoints near Bismarck, North Dakota and Colstrip, Montana. The parties will now work to finalize definitive agreements regarding PGE’s participation, which is expected to involve a 20% ownership share of the project. The North Plains Connector will be the nation’s first HVDC transmission connection between three regional U.S. electric energy markets - the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), the Western Interconnection, and the Southwest Power Pool. Alternative sources of power generation, such as renewables, are typically at great distances from load centers. In these cases, connection through High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems is the optimal solution. Mitsubishi Electric’s HVDC-Diamond® technology features the company’s proven Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) technology and apply a Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) topology for power conversion of high voltage AC to DC. Our Voltage Source Converter (VSC) based HVDC systems have faster responsiveness, independent control of active and reactive power, and a more compact physical footprint. These advantages have expanded the market for HVDC technology into new applications, such as integrating offshore wind farms, black starting islanded loads, and supplying passive networks. Two power lines one goal! Late last week, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved an order granting the authorization application to charge negotiated rates on SouthWestern Power Group’s (SWPG) high-voltage alternating-current (HVAC) RioSol Transmission Project. When energized, the estimated $2.4 billion investment, will span about 550 miles across New Mexico and Arizona. Construction is expected to start in 2026 with completion in 2028. The alternating current power line will allow for interconnection of both electrical generation and electrical users at any point along the transmission line. The RioSol line will run next to the currently under-construction 550-kV high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) SunZia transmission line. SWPG (owned by MMR Group) sold the SunZia project to Pattern Energy Group in 2022. Hitachi Energy’s HVDC Light® technology and MACH™ digital control platform was selected for the project. SunZia is expected to be up and running by December 2025.
