Promoting #music through #gaming is much more than an experimental trend. Video games are facilitating the resurgence of older songs (and premiering newer ones) by introducing them to new and young #audiences. Nate Nanzer of Epic Games says, “When we bring artists into Fortnite, we see an effect outside of Fortnite,” supporting the fact that some #songs and #artists actually re-enter streaming services top charts after being heard in video games. The rise of #musicstreaming #platforms has inundated the market with new #content daily, so artists are continuing to turn to games as a strategic focus due to intensified competition in the industry.

Over the last few years, Fortnite has gone from being just another game to becoming a cultural juggernaut. If you haven't played it yet or kept up on all that's going on in the game, now's your chance to take notice. Just this year, Fortnite's creators, Epic Games, have inked deals with Lego and Disney, are now taking on Roblox with their Lego Fortnite offering, and have added Rocket Racing and Fortnite Festival modes. As this great article from The Wall Street Journal notes, it has become one of the go-to venues for artists like Eminem, Travis Scott, Lady Gaga, and more to debut new music and reach a broad audience. While much of the music discovery conversation has been focused on TikTok and Spotify in recent years, many artists and, more notably, their labels are choosing to cast their dice with Fortnite, inking deals for exclusive debuts and in-game concerts as well as even allowing their likeness to be in the game as purchasable character skins. All in all, this year has shown that major brands are taking notice of the power of Fortnite and, by extension, video games to reach increasingly broad, diverse audiences and create partnerships that feel natural and make a profit.

I’ve been studying media this semester, and noticed that video games aren’t just the most popular form of entertainment for Gen Z and Gen Alpha, but they’re also becoming a key way for both established hitmakers and up-and-coming artists to debut new music. For example, Fortnite and Roblox have hosted several in-game shows over the past few years, with artists like Diplo, The Kid Laroi, and Weyes Blood releasing new music during performances and experiences, and rappers Big Sean and Sheck Wes debuted new songs on the game NBA 2K. What’s driving this First Person Single trend? While song clips can go viral on TikTok and Reels, whole albums can be easily consumed while people play games, and the virtual concerts typically have a playable element that helps keep people engaged.
