As a neurodivergent individual, I have to recognize that I can't be and do everything. There are ceilings and limitations whether I want it or not and organizations need to be focusing on what can be instead of what should be. Working with persons with disabilities needs to be well-thought off. In addition to hiring, one needs to prepare the workforce the person is being hired into. Because each disability is different, a system of inclusive leadership centered around listening, empathy, constant upstanding and taking action needs to be built. ADA Day was observed last week — a commemoration on July 26 of the 1990 signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by President George H.W. Bush. The ADA was the first comprehensive law in the United States to protect the civil rights of people with disabilities and prohibit discrimination based on mental or physical disabilities. The day also serves to raise awareness and break down barriers that people with disabilities face. At WesleyLife, the anniversary of the ADA signing serves as a reminder of the ever-increasing importance of the organization's DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging) platform and our ongoing efforts to expand and enhance it. Today marks the 47th anniversary of the end of the 1977 Section 504 protests, a historical effort between people with different disabilities coming together in support of legislation that affected the overall disability population. The sit-in was pivotal in getting strong 504 regulations signed that embodied concepts of equality and integration, and the affirmative steps that must be taken to achieve that for people with disabilities. DRC would like to highlight and thank Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer for introducing resolution ACR 179, a measure that would provide that members of the legislature organize a group to advance visibility, access, opportunity, and equity for individuals with disabilities by centering their voices and experiences. The measure would also proclaim April 28, 2024, as a day for all Californians to acknowledge the contributions of individuals with disabilities, to honor the changes achieved in the past to establish the rights of disabled individuals, and to recognize the work remaining in the future to secure equity for disabled individuals.
