🇫🇷🥇🌱 AI, R&D, and decarbonation are behind most of the $15 bn investments announced at #ChooseFrance France confirmed the EY study that it is the most attractive economy in Europe for the fifth year running, ahead of the UK 🇬🇧 and Germany 🇩🇪 💶1.5 bn in batteries 🪫🇪🇺European consortium FertigHy (€1.3bn for a new plant for nitrogen fertilizer based on hydrogen) 🇩🇪Lilium €400M in electric planes, 🇨🇭kl1 €300M in a nickel refinery, 🇧🇪Solvay €100M in minerals for EV batteries 🇺🇸Microsoft €4bn in data centers for its AI and cloud infrastructure, €1.2bn from Amazon for a data center and e-commerce supply chain, Telehouse Europe €1bn for 3 new eco-responsible data centers, IBM €45M in a quantum computing R&D center at Paris-Saclay, €650M from Equinix - the largest provider of data centers, 🇯🇵 KDDI Corporation €1bn in several data centers Of course, this is not just about data centers, AI skills and nuclear industry powering a decarbonized electricity, this is also about a stable economic policy to attract investors, but still I can't stop thinking of a recent interview I did: "you have no idea how much genAI consumes electricity - it can't work in the long run without nuclear plants" - that's for sure a competitive advantage coupled with AI talents in France. Looking forward to attend Viva Technology next week! DM if you want to meet there

We absolutely love these below: 👉How do we cut through the noise and make the right decisions? ✔️ Use the right tools for the right job, not just the latest tech trends. ✔️ Focus on solutions that solve real problems now, not just promises. ✔️ Look for tools that consolidate data, not create more fragmentation. ✔️ Prioritize solutions that integrate operations, not create more silos. #fecc #chemcialindustry #conference #digitalization #congress #ai #datamanagement #dataculture #chemicaldistribution
Last week, I attended the Fecc Annual Congress 2024. The theme was "Quo Vadis, Europe," and the opening set the tone with "gloom & doom." With Mario Draghi's report, it’s clear Europe is facing challenging times ahead. 🌍 Sustainability presents opportunities, but as Bernd Elser from Accenture highlighted, achieving these goals will require nine times more energy than we use today—equivalent to 508 new nuclear power plants—and over €1 trillion in investments. 💶 While the upfront costs are huge, they’re essential to unlocking the €186 billion opportunity in sustainability-related products. Digitalization and (Gen)AI were once again offered as solutions to some of the challenges. Interesting (and hilarious) to me—this has been a topic since FECC 2019, and here we are, 5 years later, still exchanging PDFs in the chemical industry while discussing AI. Many I spoke with admitted, “Our data is a mess,” yet they are still jumping on the AI bandwagon. 😅 Richard Jenkins pointed out that digitalization and AI came out on top in Congress polls, but he rightly suspected people might be confused. In my opinion, this confusion is caused by all the noise surrounding these topics. Why? The hype and overpromises overshadow real value. How many digital transformation efforts have truly been successful? Be honest. The real question is: How do we cut through the noise and make the right decisions? ✔️ Use the right tools for the right job, not just the latest tech trends. ✔️ Focus on solutions that solve real problems now, not just promises. ✔️ Look for tools that consolidate data, not create more fragmentation. ✔️ Prioritize solutions that integrate operations, not create more silos. Small steps matter. There are no shortcuts. As the saying goes, 'To cross the water, touch the stone'—focus on steady, real actions rather than rushing into the latest trends. (Thank you, Dahai Yu, for sharing this valuable Chinese proverb.) What's your take on this? How do you think the chemical industry can make real progress while navigating all the hype around digitalization and AI? P.S. Huge thanks to Dorothee Arns and her #FECC team for the top-notch organization, and for selecting such relevant topics and speakers. It was truly amazing (as always), and I'm definitely joining again next year in Hamburg! A few months ago Paris-based Avenirs Energétiques reached out to me. It is an association dedicated to promoting informed and balanced discussions on energy issues, in this case green industry in Europe in this changing climate. Youtube video: https://lnkd.in/grdVaStW French-speaking acquaintances will find this valuable, as while I was interviewed in the only language I'm fluent in despite lots of efforts to learn others, my talking head clips are brief and the vast majority of the segment is in French. Their questions to me focused on the challenges of reinvigorating European manufacturing, especially of essential green technologies like solar panels, wind turbines, batteries and EVs in the face of massively scaled Chinese competition. As I've noted a few times, China maintained an industrial policy, running toward where the low-carbon ball would be, while North America and Europe to different degrees, chased the ball through the markets. China has a massive domestic market for all green products, with everything on the list and more sold and built in China usually in larger quantities than the rest of the world combined. This gives a massive advantage regarding the experience curve, as they've already doubled production times more than most non-Chinese competitors consider reasonable in their wildest dreams. China also has a strong purchasing power parity advantage, with their domestic supply chains costing 40% less than the West's. In part this is because the industrial policy included geographical clustering of related industries so supply chains are geographically short, challenges can be resolved by hands on local experts and the local skilled labor and expertise pool is extraordinary. China also has an education advantage, having made a specific policy of educating everyone to a high level, having a strong focus on STEM and having strong support for foreign study at the best schools with good boomerang results back to China. As a result, it's graduating far more STEM PhDs than the west, and they are not inferior academically. Similarly, it's outstripping the west in patents, and while quality may have been low 20 years ago, this is not true today. Finally, China — especially but not solely — through its Belt & Road Initiative has been establishing global supply chains of critical materials necessary for green products, and developed expertise in processing those materials. Since 2010, they've been focused on cleaning up that processing as well. Tariffs and subsidies will be insufficient in the face of these advantages. A 100% tariff on EVs to the USA still leaves BYD's cars cheaper than US EVs. Countries and geographies should consider their unique opportunities for specialization in specific industries. And they should seriously rethink their positions on industrial policies, rejecting the markets-only consensus that emerged during the 1980s and 1990s. #china #europe #competition #industry #climateaction

The main point is that applied intelligence relies on successful collaboration throughout the entire value chain. Data alone has no real significance. This statement emphasizes that the value of data comes from how well different parts of an organization work together to use that data effectively. Simply having data isn’t enough; it must be shared and interpreted collaboratively to drive meaningful insights and decisions.
