Thank you Goldy Hyder and #AmChamCanada for hosting this important event in #Ottawa featuring United States Ambassador David L. Cohen and keynote speaker #TeckResources CEO Jonathan Price Hats off to you Jonathan for your compelling address on the importance of strengthening critical minerals security - vital to Canada’s future in clean energy, advance computing, green transportation, and defence applications. And vital not only to Canada’s economic and security priorities but also to those of democratic nations around the world. You did not mince words on the how overwhelmingly dependent the free world is on the global critical minerals supply chain currently heavily dominated by #China. The specifics are indeed “staggering” - “China controls in the range of 40 to over 90 percent of global processing capacity for many minerals, from copper to cobalt”. This poses an enormous risk that cries out for an urgent response. But as you point out, China’s investment in mines and minerals continues to outpace all other other producing countries by a long shot. You laid out clear priorities and challenged governments and companies to work together on an urgent basis to clear away the obstacles to moving forward. Bravo for signalling the dead weight of the permitting process. To make your point, you said it takes 15 years to build a single copper mine today! This is beyond outrageous and Canada needs to wake up and do something about it - urgently. Driven by joint security concerns, Canada and the United States should be pursuing a come hell or high water strategy to get us on the playing field. And by way of a general comment, the mining sector in Canada has for far too long suffered from complacency and diffidence on the part of our political class. This attitude needs to change and the the mining sector, and the broader natural resource sector in Canada, need the support of the broader business community. In the words of Ambasador David L. Cohen in advancing the case for critical minerals, businesses in North America and not governments should be taking the lead. Finally, I was taken by your mention of the enormous potential of an advanced, integrated manufacturing investment in EV battery recycling at Teck’s industrial facilities in #Trail British Columbia. This project makes great sense and I wish Teck every success. My friend and colleague Goldy Hyder summed up the morning by reminding us all that Canada knows what needs to be done in confronting our national priorities. “We simply need to get on with it”. Music to my ears as ridding ourselves of our national complacency is one of the over-arching themes of my recent memoir #PrivatePowerPublicPurpose.
Members of the Business Council of Canada are passionate about Canada, its place in the world, and the health of our democracy. Teck Resources Limited CEO Jonathan Price came to Ottawa -- just steps from Parliament Hill -- to deliver a powerful message about the crucial role his company plays in both a successful #EnergyTransition and strengthening #EconomicSecurity between Canada and the United States. As Jonathan shared in his remarks, the stakes are extremely high and our competition is not waiting. We must move with speed and work together at all levels of government, across borders, and with the private sector to meet the moment. This is not just about building prosperity for the people of North America, it's also about contributing to our friends and allies around the world. My sincere thanks to Ambassador David L. Cohen (United States Embassy Ottawa and Consulates in Canada) for participating in the fireside chat and to Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP) CEO Jennifer Ditchburn for so skillfully moderating the conversation. And thank you to Rick Tachuk, Kim Kelly and the team at American Chamber of Commerce in Canada (AmCham Canada) for your partnership and making the event such a great success. #FriendsPartnersAllies Read Jonathan's full remarks posted by Policy Magazine: https://lnkd.in/e34zrFhY And watch the event on CPAC (Cable Public Affairs Channel / Chaîne d'affaires publiques par câble): https://lnkd.in/edn9Rmc4
