THE PRICE OF DISRESPECT: WESTBROOK’S $35K FINE Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook has been fined $35,000 by the NBA for making an obscene gesture during a game, the league announced on Friday, November 29. The incident took place in the fourth quarter of Denver’s 145-118 home loss to the New York Knicks on Monday. Westbrook, who scored 24 of his 27 points in the final quarter, made a middle finger gesture towards the Knicks’ bench after hitting a 3-pointer with 5:55 remaining. Westbrook appeared to be reacting to the «travel!» shouts from New York’s bench. Initially, it seemed he had left his feet and come back down with the ball still in his hands. However, a closer look suggests that Josh Hart slightly dislodged the ball from Westbrook’s hands, allowing him to legally reestablish control with a live dribble upon his descent. Joe Dumars, NBA executive vice president and head of basketball operations, announced the fine. Westbrook, 36, is averaging 12.2 points, 5.9 assists, and 4.1 rebounds in 17 games (three starts) in his first season with the Nuggets. The nine-time All-Star and two-time scoring champion has career averages of 21.6 points, 8.1 assists, and 7.1 rebounds over 17 seasons with six teams. Despite the circumstances, the league will not tolerate players making obscene gestures during games. While a $35,000 fine might seem excessive in everyday terms, it’s a small amount for an NBA player like Westbrook, who has earned nearly $350 million in salary alone in his career, not including his numerous endorsements. He’ll manage. Nevertheless, this situation underscores the importance of maintaining respectful behavior, especially for athletes who serve as role models. It’s crucial for players to demonstrate sportsmanship and integrity, both on and off the court, to inspire fans and future generations. Perhaps, a larger fine should have been imposed.

Cavaliers ink Marcus Morris for remainder of the season - https://lnkd.in/dSHc46aS MARCH 29: The Cavaliers have officially signed Morris for the remainder of the season, the team confirmed today. in a press release. 28TH MARCH: Forward Mark Morris saw his 10-day contract with him gentlemen will expire overnight, temporarily making him an unrestricted free agent. However, he won't remain a free agent for long, according to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com (Twitter link), the Cavs plan to bring Morris back on a deal that covers the remainder of the 2023/24 season. Many players who sign 10-day contracts don't play much for their new clubs, but that wasn't the case for Morris. He averaged 7.8 points and 3.0 rebounds in 18.4 minutes per game in his five appearances with Cleveland. Morris, a 13-year NBA veteran, has technically been on four teams this season, but he didn't play in a game for two of them (the Clippers and Spurs). He was sent from Los Angeles to Philadelphia in the James Harden deal, then shipped from Philadelphia to San Antonio at the February deadline. The 34-year-old was waived by the Spurs late last month, making him eligible for the playoffs. He found a new team a few weeks later when he signed with Cleveland. The Cavs have an opening on their standard roster, meaning they don't need to cut anyone to re-sign Morris. Their 18-man roster will be complete once the deal is official. As NFL season unfolds two players are continuously being talked about as top contenders for Offensive Player of the Year: Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley. What are there similarities? Both of these running backs have been on a tear this season, and they’re on pace to rack up over 2,000 scrimmage yards and potentially reach close to 20 touchdowns each. Also, both players were undervalued this past offseason, largely due to the league’s ongoing trend of devaluing the running back position. With the rise of pass-heavy offenses and a focus on quarterbacks and wide receivers, running backs like Henry and Barkley were bargain deals for the Eagles and Ravens. Barkley's three-year $37.75 million and Henry's two-year $16 million deals seem absurd when you consider the value they bring to an offense when the going rate for an elite wide reciever is $30 million a year. Players like Henry and Barkley not only provide consistent yardage and touchdowns, but they also serve as emotional leaders and catalysts for their teams. Their ability to dominate on the ground opens up play-action opportunities, creating balance that allows quarterbacks to thrive. It also has helped the Ravens and Eagles close out games by draining the clock after they have a lead in the 4th quarter, which both teams struggled with last season. I believe the NFL needs to rethink its stance on the running back position—these athletes are still essential to winning football games and deserve to be valued accordingly. Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley are proving that running backs should remain a cornerstone of offensive success and I do believe this season will cause the pendulum to swing in the running backs favor. #NFL #RunningBacks #DerrickHenry #SaquonBarkley #OffensivePlayerOfTheYear #Football #Undervalued

All Star Snubs??? Over the weekend, the reserves and pitchers were named for the 2024 MLB All-Star Game, which will be held July 16 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The starters were named last week. As is the case every year, it’s disheartening to see deserving players left off the All-Star team, often referred to as ‘snubs.' One snub that stood out to me was the Arizona Diamondbacks First Baseman, Christian Walker, who left off the team. Walker is having an impressive season with 22 home runs and more than 60 RBIs and helped lead the DBacks to the World Series in 2023. Last week, the D-Backs were in LA to play the Dodgers, and Walker put on a clinic, much like he did in the ’23 playoffs, hitting five home runs in the three-game series. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts called him “Babe Ruth against us.” But apparently, the Babe wasn’t good enough. Part of the problem is that every team must have at least one all-star representative, a rule designed to ensure every team is represented, but which can sometimes leave one less slot for other deserving players. Ironically, this year’s NL All-Star manager is the D-Backs manager Torey Lovullo, Walker’s manager. But Lovullo clearly couldn’t pull the strings for one of his guys. As we mentioned earlier, this year’s team includes 19 players under the age of 27, but what about older players like Walker, now 33 and in his 10th MLB season? A shame. John Boxley Box-seats.com
