Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: More Than Just a Trend A few months ago, we CyberX Info System worked with a client who needed to grow their team but wanted to make sure they were building a truly diverse and inclusive workplace. They didn’t want to just meet a goal- they wanted to create a team that brought together different ideas and perspectives. At first, they were hiring the way many companies do, reaching out to the same networks and using the same methods. That’s when we started talking about how they could improve their hiring process to focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). DEI isn’t about checking boxes. It’s about making sure everyone has a fair chance, no matter their background or experience. It’s also about recognizing any biases in the hiring process and working to fix them. The goal is to build teams where everyone’s voice is heard and valued. Working with this client taught us a lot. As a recruitment outsourcing company, we’ve learned how important it is to search for talent in new places. We now focus on finding candidates from all kinds of backgrounds, different races, genders, ages, and abilities. But it’s not just about finding diverse talent. We also help our clients create fair hiring processes that give everyone an equal shot. We saw the benefits firsthand. After hiring more diverse candidates, our client noticed a big change. Not only was their team more diverse, but they started seeing new ideas and different approaches to work, which helped their business grow. For us, DEI is more than just something to talk about- it’s something we’re committed to. We’ve learned that companies do better when they embrace diversity in hiring. It’s not always easy to break old habits, but it’s worth it. By helping our clients hire more inclusively, we’re creating workplaces that don’t just look different, they think and act differently, too, and that makes all the difference. ON NAVIGATING DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS Recently I had a candid conversation with a CEO, and I am sharing this with their permission. We were talking about talent strategies and how they and other fellow founders and CEOs were very reluctant to take a punt on being more adventurous around how they recruited, retained and promoted talent. They felt a lot more inclined to pattern match and have homogenous teams because stepping outside of that often felt too much of challenge for them. Even moreso as an increasing number of startups and scaleups are reluctant to have HR departments. I learnt from our conversation (and a few others to be fair) that a lot of orgs screen social media of applicants to see if they are openly political. Many will veer away from those who are activists around equality issues on gender, race, sexual orientation and similar issues. Same energy applies to suppliers too. Our conversation moved towards how I work with organisations around brave conversations. How orgs can be antifragile and commercially sustainable without losing compassion. And yet there was this lingering feeling that while we were able to have this open conversation many more aren't. There is a real "quiet" movement of orgs shaping talent pipelines that are less political. As the layoffs from big orgs continue, I continue to wonder what the landscape looks like when less people want robust conversations to explore differences and find some kind of middle ground, and go for "safe". I remain hopeful in the work that I do that ambitious, innovative executives can have these brave conversations, but boi, it really is squeaky bum time out here in these streets. #braveleadership #talentstrategy #inclusiveleadership

However, now as I’m actively looking for new role opportunities, I’ve encountered a familiar challenge—companies still see the GAP in my employment tenure as a roadblock and not focusing on skills and learnings adaptability. Are "Equal Opportunity" Claims Truly Reflected in Actions? In today’s job market, I’m genuinely surprised that some organizations still hold onto outdated notions, especially when it comes to career restart opportunities for women. Despite declaring themselves as "equal opportunity employers" on their websites, many don’t extend this mindset when it matters most. There seems to be a clear misalignment between what these companies claim and how they act.
